Joyce around the time he was beating Dubois, Takam and Parker pre Zhang or Whyte when he was on his best run beating Parker, Chisora and Rivas etc

It wasn't long ago a large portion of the forum were claiming Joyce had one of the greatest chins in history. That theory sure got Zhanged.

Joyce at his best was actually formidable and looked like a world beater.

Whyte only ever looked like a very good contender.

Joyce turned pro already on the decline, with his prime ending in 2020 against Dubois.

He stayed at a decent level for the next 2 years but how he's shot to ****.

But Joyce from any time before 2022 smoke Whyte.

I never rated Joyce but he managed to pull off some good wins. I would pick Whyte to win but then I also picked Dubois and Parker to beat Joyce.

He still does, he gets hit flush more than any HW in history to be fair and Zhang is an ATG punchet

We'll have to wait and see to get a better answer after they fight IMO - I do think Whyte will knock Joyce out when they meet in April but Joyce has had the better wins IMO and they were not lucky wins - he controlled those fights very well. Zhang was just all wrong for Joyce and took his soul literally.

I'd probably favour a prime Joyce over a prime Whyte.

I agree. That's pretty much how I saw it. His career took off too late. Joyce should have been a champion otherwise.

It is difficult to see when he could have been a champion. I guess he could be switched out for Joshua in the Charles Martin fight or Wilder in the Stiverne fight.

He faced two power punchers. The first one, Dubois, he acknowledged the power of and treated with some respect, choosing to outbox him. But Dubois was very green at that point and Joyce was an Olympian. The second he got in the ring with was old Zhang and he didn't treat his power with the same respect (probably suspecting he couldn't outbox him).

Could he get through 12 rounds with prime Wilder or Joshua? Doubtful. Could he beat Fury on points? I'm not sure he beats the younger and faster versions of Parker and Ruiz Jr. I do think he should have gotten a world title fight, though. He was badly (some suggest deliberately) mismanaged after he beat Warren's goldenchild, Dubois

I would have favoured Joyce at his best.

The Dubois win is better than anything Whyte has. You can also compare e.g. vs Parker. Whyte at his best only squeaked by Parker at home, in every sense of the word (mis-scoring of Rnd 2 headclash as a knockdown, and saved by the bell in Rnd 12). Joyce by contrast controlled most of the fight (even though he got hit with some big shots as he always does).

As to who will win their current match-up, it depends on who is more shot. My gut feeling is that Joyce is more shot, but we'll see.

Many of those guys didn't face each other when they should have so it's hard to assess. I'm not really to high up on the modern champions for all the constant avoidance in their primes. I think careful match making is the main difference between the champions and the top 10 guys.
