I was alive then, and I am told I watched the fight with my father, but I don’t really remember. That said, Duran quitting a fight must have been… absolutely unreal. He was the toughest meanest MFer out there. For him to quit? Just insane. and he’s not like he was in trouble. It just wasn’t looking good for him. What warrior stops believing in their ability to turn it around?
Fury can be a bit of a bellend, but he’s a true warrior when he steps into that ring. Doesn’t have an ounce of quit or doubt in him. All credit to him for that.
Douglas - Holyfield: clearly Douglas was hurt by the shot that put him down, but he was completely conscious, leaning on one elbow, rubbed his nose to see if it was bleeding (it wasn't), then he just kind of lay back calmly staring at the ceiling and waiting to be counted out.
Mike Jones vs Randall Bailey. Heading into the 10th, the decision was already a forgone conclusion. IBF title in the bag for Jones. Bailey was being outclassed in one of the worst title fights in recent memory. Welp, with 20 seconds to go in the 10th round, Bailey cracks Jones with a solid 1-2, and sends Jones flying to the canvas. Jones immediately jumps back up and the round ends with Bailey being unable to land another punch. Jones then takes over again in the 11th, and it´s back to regular scheduling. But once again with 20 seconds to go, Bailey cracks Jones! This time with an uppercut. Jones fails to beat the count.
Another one that had me scratching my head at the time was Ricky Burns being thoroughly outclassed by Jose Gonzalez in Glasgow - 2 fights before Crawford did it, and arguably Gonzalez looked even classier than Crawford did beating Burns! But Gonzalez - inexplicably IMO - quit on his stool and didn't come out for the 10th round, claiming a wrist injury. Whilst Burns had a better round in round 9, and maybe won his first round of the fight, he in no way dominated or hurt Gonzalez, and Gonzalez did not look to have a wrist injury in anyway. V odd indded, Burns got away with it that night!
