Eh I am a novice but I’ll give my 0.2$ don’t stay at any gym where sparring isn’t regular, I see places where it’s like once a month seemingly, don’t stay at a gym where you’re being taught punches or movements but not the “why and when” everything has a purpose, don’t listen to people who over complicate things it’s a lot of simple things chained together. If the only time you see your coach is on pads… someone should be supervising even beginners at the shadow boxing and bag work (FYI use a smaller bag that you can move around and actually “work”) you will beat bad habits into yourself in all of those activities without good eyes. Sparring is a learning experience, relax, everybody gets beat up a little that’s an old cliche but it’s easy to feel useless after your first spar. DONT wear a football helmet or any clunky big head gear (try slipping in a big head gear) it doesn’t protect your brain, the more it weighs the worse it is for your brain… it’s for cuts… open face guard or minimal cheek only. If you leave a session and say “What did I learn?” Leave don’t play with your brain health and endure bad teachers.
So what else can you do besides train through the pain? Do you drop your hands and quit punching to give your shoulders a rest? You gotta push through and past the pain. Let me know which club you're boxing out of. Easy wins can be tough to find. If pain scares you than you picked the wrong sport.
Respectfully I think you might be misunderstanding Rockin. I think he’s talking about joint pain for exercise in general not boxing.
I hear ya, but he should be at a general exercise website rather than a boxing website. A coach like him would raise a bunch of creampuff fighters.
You can ruin your rotator cuffs and be ****ed for a few years while they heal. Then again, I have always been a DIY kinda guy, so my second bit of advice is get a personal trainer if you have that attitude. I assume a PT will know what is the correct form and when to push and when to stop. If you're gonna be stupid, at least be smart about it.
A personal trainer? PTs don't know sheet about boxing. Johnny Moore was my trainer and Jackie Kallen was my manager. I threw fists against current, future and present world champions. (sparring) As well as simply tough fighters and 1 tomato can. The guy didn't belong anywhere near a ring, let alone fighting in one. Just sayin'. Stupid is as.............
And the only time that I ever f'd up my shoulders was when I was working a heavy bag that was too heavy/hard for me.
I’ve been told in the past a big wide heavy bag turns your hook into a slap and is always pain on your joints.
It very well could, if you catch it a few times and your wrist is cocked wrong, you injure it. And then begin bad habits.
Prioritize sleep and general rest more. I was plagued by injuries my whole career and I think this had a lot to do with it. on the other hand, running myself into the dirt all the time made me very mentally tough and confident, so it’s a double edged sword.
