Could we see an Opetaia fight in the future? If the man is willing to test himself, he should go for it. He said he's got injuries and it needs healing and he may fight in October. Maybe he'll get strip of one of his belts, but we'll see. He is open to fighting against Beterbiev again, Benevidez and Canelo. He mentions Cruiserweight at around 2:40. This content is protected
Out of all existing possibilities for Bivol, I consider the potential fight against Canelo to be the least compelling one. Bivol defeated him convincingly the first time, despite what the official scorecards say. There's really no need for a rematch.
He's arguably on the small side for a LHW, so props for the balls but he's certainly not a natural CW.
I could actually see him becoming undisputed at Cruiserweight. Think about it, the Unified champ is a guy he's already beat and who hasn't fought a style even remotely similar since and the WBC champion is a dude who hasn't fought in two years and also isn't a natural Cruiserweight, and none of the guys in line to fight for it are particularly special. Granted, Bivol would be carrying a fair bit more weight going into these fights, but they'd both be good ones for him to test the waters and likely snag a title or two along the way, so at the very least he could say he was a two weight champion if nothing else. The main obstacle would be Opetaia of course, but I'm not convinced it's unwinnable. Opetaia has been known to gas badly in the second half of fights, even when he's in complete control and dictating the pace as we saw in the rematch with Briedis. It'd all depend on how well Bivol carries the extra weight of course, but I think this is a winnable fight. I'd probably be expecting an Opetaia win, but Bivol pulling off the upset isn't beyond the pale by any means.
Man I respect Bivol so much. His mentality is so unbelievably on the opposite of the spectrum compared to floyd and tank it is insane. If every boxer had the Bivol mentality US boxing would have never died
Maybe he should go watch Kovalev versus Pulev and see how small Kovalev looked and how he was running around jabbing all night scared to engage. If you don't have big power at LHW, and you're on the small side even there, going to cruiser is just dumb.
Would rather see him first try to win the trilogy against Beterbiev and then take on Benevidez. There's definitely some unfinished business left at Light Heavyweight.
