Yeah Eddie seemed to care at the start and was putting on shows in Hull, but then it died down. I had him winning the Linares fight close. & it was annoying how he didn't jump on Garcia after the knockdown. He had bad luck with the WBC, and their corrupt, favouritism for Haney.
I know what you mean but think it's very harsh to include Froch on that list. Every title Bellew ever won was vacant.
A deal was agreed for Campbell to fight Javier Fortuna for the WBC title in early 2020 but then covid hit. They'd made Haney 'champion in recess' as he was injured but then with boxing postponed for months he was reinstated and Campbell lost the shot.
Agree that Campbell was quality. He’s our best ever amateur to boot and also a very humble and nice guy. Shame that he struggled on the front foot or he could have stopped Garcia early after that heavy knockdown. I was there for that fight and was very impressed with Garcia who was vicious and exciting. Ref your Crolla comment, I think Hearn thought he might have Hatton 2.0 on his hands support wise and kept giving him opportunities. He was wrong.
Agree, Garcia had frightening hand speed. I know, not fair how the sport works at times is it. Popularity contest.
Thing is, Campbell comes across a nice bloke, good looking fella, good skill set, Olympic gold medallist… he should have been easy to promote and you’d have thought Hearn would have been all over it.
Exactly. Don’t think there was many boxers around Hull in that time too. Hearn put a few on in the ice hockey arena. Coyle banging out Katsidis was brilliant. Rumble in the Humber, but he never pushed on with it, it seemed. I’m not really a fan of stadium fights but less deserving than him got them and he could have had some good fights at that time and sold loads. That KC stadium is a good stadium is good as well and not too huge where you’d need your binoculars. Defo seems as if his face didn’t fit.
It is a bit of a head scratcher as he also got to the final of that dancing on ice reality show on ITV shortly after winning gold in 2012 so had another legion of fans who voted for him on that. He was known by various audiences. It’s up there with the crap job that Hearn did with Kell Brook, that’s for sure.
I live in Hull and the best atmosphere I've been in for anything was Curtis Woodhouse winning British title in Hull Ice Arena it was electric but would never get compared with Bivol v Beterbiev lol.. Regarding Luke Campbell I'd say he was mismanaged to a degree and unlucky... He needed to click with a Pro trainer and be more active.. He got beat unexpectedly when he really shouldn't have fought and just put a spanner in his career.. Also I don't think Benn v McClennan was anywhere near Benns best night of boxing. He was probably already past his best by then
Kell Brooks career is a stain on UK boxing and Hearn wrecked it... Warren would have had him many title fights..
He did but it was a big set back.. I can't remember exactly what had happened and Campbell wanted to fight but would have benefited swerving the fight, at least for a couple of months.. He shocked me how good he was at elite level and I didn't think his trainer was good for him at all.. It felt to me he's fighting at highest level with wrong trainer and promoter.. However he's got out with his marbles and money
Campbell lost to Mendy and that completely threw his career off. by the time he rebuilt, the days of Flanagan and Crolla winning lightweight titles were over and the level of the division shot up. tough, but partly his own fault.
Maybe for the classic forum but Randy Turpin from Liverpool beat Sugar Ray Robinson in 1951 in London. Not sure how good the fight was but an outstanding won nonetheless.
And what did you think of Alex Arthur vs Michael Gomez Johnny? A fight of the highest quality many say, of legendary quality right up there with the greatest fights between the best boxers in history
