Nowadays, the comparison of weight classes is meaningless because the weights of the fighters are so unbalanced. Fighters in lower weight classes are coming in bigger than fighters in higher weight classes on fight day. (Zurdo, Benavidez, Haney.) How about reducing the weight divisions and stacking talented fighters in each weight class instead?
If you are eating and delivering punches you appreciate the different weight classes. What we need less of are sanctioning bodies and titles. Make them all strive for one world title. We are only one world, but we have 100s of world title holders. Put them under one sanctioning body, instead of 3, 5 or more sanctioning bodies. Make them all fight for one title like they did soooo long ago. Do that and you will have better match ups and maybe draw a few more people in to watching the sport.
Yes. There are too many, especially with the day before weigh-ins. We also need stronger governing bodies like the BBBofC, and the JBC. Together they could put an end to all of the sanctioning body nonsense, by simply not allowing them to function in their jurisdictions - like the JBC did with the WBO and the IBF.
One sanctioning body and like 5 or 6weightclasses, for example minimum, light, middle, light heavy and heavy. 17 weight classes are just ridiculous. Something like Limit for minimum 55kg Limit for light 65kg Limit for middle 75kg Limit for light heavy 85kg Limit for cruiser 95kg Heavyweight everything above 95.
Yes there's way too many. It makes it way easier for fighters to duck and it's unfriendly to casuals.
I'm still of the opinion that weightclasses should be just as they are in the amateurs. No more, no less
Fewer weight divisions would be good for the sport. We should get rid of light flyweight, light bantamweight, light featherweight, super featherweight, light welterweight, light middleweight, super middleweight, and bridgerweight. Keep these: Strawweight Flyweight Bantamweight Featherweight Lightweight Welterweight Middleweight Light Heavyweight Cruiserweight Heavyweight 10 weight divisions. And there should be same-day weigh-ins to stop weight bullies like Haney, K. Davis and Benavidez from always having a size advantage.
Yeah weight is pretty significant there comes a point were it matters. That's why I am not sure about going back to 8 weight classes. Perhaps 2-3 less weight classes and less belts.
Yes - there should be less weight classes with the great suggestions that @Perkin Warbeck had above. More importantly IMO there should be 1 belt per weight class. It is painful looking at the current lightweight champions knowing that won't fight each other for a very long time. UFC took advantage of both less weight classes and one belt per class which was one of the reasons why it became quite popular. Who knows - Turki might have something up his sleeve.
10 weight classes is just perfect. Rename cruiser to jr. heavyweight. Sounds silly, but leaps and bounds better than cruiserweight.
We need same day weigh ins, lets remove the blow ups. You fight at 147? Then your weight shouldnt exceed that on fight night.
