Getting excited now. Three medals of any colour would be huge. Fantastic for Irish boxing. At the risk of inciting patriotic criticism - I also like to see the Brits do well in the boxing - after all if they turn pro we will all take an interest in their careers in addition to the Irish. Because of that i want DeGale to get a medal as well (so long as he loses to Sutherland later on - likewise for Jeffries). 6 medals between Ireland and Britain would be fantastic stuff

We all hoped for a win, but to be honest, I thought Sutherland might have faltered today, but christ he was brilliant. Can any of our boys make it to the final???:hi:

That fra, IMO was the best Irish performance of the tournament.Controlled aggression, with sound defence. Sutherland was beyond criticism today. His semi-final opponent DeGale has been boxing out of his skin also.It should be a close fight when they meet.:hi:

The Irish lads are older and have more amateur experience than the British lads. Egan and Sutherland should certainly win, but I reckon the British lads could make better pros.

Ireland needs the golds/silvers more than we do, wouldn't begrudge them. I'm always happy to see the Irish do well.

i wouldnt say that yet...if our lads get to silver then thats one hell of a pedigree they will have...

btw...if i could just ask the resident experts of the irish boxing thread...
do you think carruth should have done better as a pro...and if so, why do you think he didnt go further ?

The British lads have more time to adapt to the pro ranks as they're 3/4 years younger than the Irish guys. Means they're less experienced than Egan and Sutherland when it comes to the amateurs though.

totally get your point and a very valid one...although i'm thinking about how slowly amir khan has to be brought on because of his age...and how steve collins was older when he was world champ...

again..i totally get your point...but am not sure i would think they would be better just because of age now...

The Irish lads have had longer amateur careers so I can see them (especially Egan: an excellent amateur) beating the British pair quite smartly. A lengthy amateur career can make it difficult to adjust to the paid ranks though (I really hope the Irish lads forge good pro careers, Irish boxing needs world championship level fighters).

It would be good if an Irish boxer or two won through to the final, as I'll be in Ireland when the finals are on. As it stands Barnes has the hardest task.
