I favour Quarry but if he didn't win I wouldn't think that much about it, honestly. I'm not even thinking that much about it right now.
Side note: My cousin came to my mom's birthday in January, pulled out her phone and showed me a picture of Roland LaStartza. She asked me if I knew who he was. And I said, yeah, I know him. I told her he fought Rocky Marciano (she doesn't follow boxing, but I figured she may have heard of him) for the World Heavyweight Title. And she told me her son is dating Roland's granddaughter. I met her (the granddaughter) at a wedding about five months ago, but I didn't know that then. Pretty wild.
LaStarza gave Marciano 2 good fights but lost to former light-heavy Dan Bucceroni and journeyman Rocky Jones and struggled to a split win over Rex Layne who had been badly stopped my Marciano a couple of years previously. Quarry at his best was a superb counter-puncher with terrific power in his fists. LaStarza was a good boxer who might give Jerry some problems early on, but Quarry would break him down and stop him in about 9 rounds of a good scrap.
I think this could be a close fight. Quarry was a good counterpuncher and Lastarza was very defensive minded. With that combination it might not make for the most action packed fight but I could see a lot of the rounds being difficult to score. I’m leaning towards Quarry to take a decision but who knows.
Rex Layne and Roland LaStraza are dissed way too much round here, might be time for a reevaluation, seems to me just because there guys Marciano beat.
Layne has some credentials despite his utter lack of talent. Lastarza is just nothing. Combine the two of them and you don't even get a Frans Botha.
interesting, I briefly worked in sales for construction products in Brooklyn and met his nephew Gerald LaStarza a high end contractor and I did not put two and two together until he mentioned something boxing related and I asked him if he was related to Roland LaStarza, he was shocked a kid in his 20's knew anything about Marciano let alone his uncle this was back before the pandemic
