His brother said the cause of death wasn't yet known. He was 76, so it could have been anything at that age. If I had to guess, maybe a sudden heart attack or stroke.

Holmes, being the oldest living heavyweight champion, is the father of the heavyweight division.

Very very sad news. Although I didn't forsee his early passing I was questioning lately how frequently I saw pics and vids of him sitting down while others around him were standing.

Sad to hear this. One of the last great heavyweight legends is gone. He had an inspiring life.

    Rest in peace, Big George.

25 year old Foreman would annihilate Shannon Briggs

Forgot to mention earlier that I did see Big George fight in person.

Obviously on his ‘second career.’ Was in Atlantic City for Tyson-Spinks, which iirc was for some odd reason on a Monday, and like Thursday or Friday through Sunday there were smaller cards around Atlantic City.

In addition to seeing Azumah Nelson (stopping Lupe Suarez), they did a couple of ‘special editions’ of Tuesday Night Fights on USA Network on like Thursday and Friday (or maybe it was Friday-Saturday). One featured the late Hector Camacho and the other featured Foreman vs Carlos Hernandez … I think that was his name.

Hardly a special fight, but I’m glad I can say that I saw one of the marvels of our time — maybe of all time — fight with my own eyes.

    RIP Big George.

I had a friend who was 80, ex-Marine, looked 50, ran several miles every day, was the picture of health, washboard abs …and he went to bed one night and didn’t wake up the next morning. When you get into your late 70s it might not be advisable to buy green bananas.
