15 rounds. The Prime Man Mountain Tubbs who beat Greg Page versus the Joe Walcott who twice beat Ezzard Charles. Arthur Mercante handling the refereeing chores.
I’d say Tubbs UD. Too much size, reach coupled with hand speed for Joe. Plus Joe would spend too much time trying to get past Tony’s jab.
I suspect this goes the distance in a close fight. Walcott could be inconsistent and have some off nights but Tubbs wasn’t exactly the poster boy for discipline and consistency. Key here for Walcott is setup that left hook like the one he KO’d Charles with. Tony was KO’d on a handful of occasions in his career with the left, though to be fair he was a bit past it when it happened. Still it’s an ideal game plan for Jersey.
This is a hypothetical H2H matchup where they’re both at their very best, Walcott was very inconsistent, should’ve got the decision against Louis, was way ahead against Marciano and dropped him, but lost to Rex Layne and Elmer Ray, but within that inconsistency, he proved that him at his very peak was indeed elite level and his very peak, he showed he was a level ahead of Tubbs by knocking out prime Charles, getting robbed against Louis and clearly beating Marciano after dropping him at 38, at Tubbs’ best, he didn’t beat/be competitive with that level of fighter.
Very interesting. I dont have a definitive opinion on this match up. But why is everybody talking about Tubbs like he was some sort of unheralded ATG? At his best Tubbs was just a glorified contender.
You are technically right; however we have been down that creek many times. Sure Jersey Joe lost a gazimillion fights; but he gets a sort of pass from me due to his extremely challenging personal and family circumstances. Hard to say how many fights Jersey Joe lost due to lack of proper nutrition or enough training and how many losses were due to him not being good enough. However I agree losing every third fight looks bad and is literally journeyman stuff.
The same "glorified contender" who beat Smith, Page, Norris, Seldon, Ferguson, Biggs, and DESERVED a decision over Bowe. Also fought hard with a good version of Witherspoon who wound up knocking the **** out of Frank Bruno.
Tony Tubbs did not beat Riddick Bowe. Yes - it was a close fight but Riddick Bowe clearly outpointed Tony Tubbs and Riddick Bowe deserved the victory. End of story.
I get your argument; but regardless his potential and skills, Tubbs was an underachiever who briefly got a belt during the alphabet soup era and that was it. Maybe if Tubbs stays in shape, keeps motivated and avoids drugs he becomes an ATG. But that is a massive "woulda shoulda coulda". What we got is what we got, and Tubbs is just a footnote in the history of the HW division.
