James Toney: Wilder is a Failure

Wilder went pretty far for someone who started boxing as late as he did. Imagine if he had started at age 10.

 

He's been punch drunk for what, 10 years? Perhaps 15 by now?

 

Surely wilder tried here and there to cherrypick fights and always had excuses after the losses with fury .

But calling a world champion with 48 hw fights and 10 title defences a "failure" is a bit strange .

Other champions are WAY short of wilders legacy !

FRAUD? Absolutely.

Failure? Absolutely not. Failures don't have double digit title defences and retire with 10's of millions of dollars.

 

Would have KO'd everyone in 2 or 3 rounds?

I am not convinced he even beats Ortiz or Scott and many of the guys Wilder KO'd likely go the distance with Toney who was not a hitter at heavyweight

good post. And yep, Fury is also an underachiever, although his ceiling was so high that even the underachieving version is the second best of his era.

 

Against who did he win that title against ?

And yes, but also in a sense maybe not... Fury's ceiling certainly looked really high, but the reasons he didn't do more aren't easily separated from his personality, and especially his inability to do things "in moderation" (food, alcohol and even PEDs - we all know they're rife, but you've got to really overdo it to get caught).

Plus, in hindsight - he was a unified champion only until stripped (after Wlad) with zero defences of those titles, other than that he was a one-belt champion for a while and that's about it - in achievement terms it's not nothing, but it's not great either.

And where resume is concerned... Yes, it's pretty decent but it could've been so much better too - taking the rematch against Wlad and winning it would make a collosal improvement... Taking the Joshua fight would've made a big improvement, too... As would just not retiring through his prime.

At the same time, Fury's also been lucky to only lose to Usyk - if you look how many times he came close to losing fights he really shouldn't have, his record could be so much worse on paper.


Yes, possibly still enough for second best for his era - but he could've done a lot more to remove the debate.

 

I need to find out how I can fail into medaling in the Olympics, being a world champion, defending my title numerous times, and get rich…..

 

He still was the lineal champion and 2x The Ring champion before losing to Usyk and nobody between 2015 and 2022 earned the right to call themselves that, so it kinda boosts his legacy a bit. His defences of the lineage were laughable tho.
