I've been thinking of fights to make next for both these guys and thought this was an interesting matchup. The question is, is it too big a jump for Itauma? Zhang's glaring limitations were made even more obvious in his last fight against Kabayel so perhaps its not a ridiculous a step up as it would've been before, but Itauma hasn't fought anyone serious and he has never been chin checked.
That's quite a chin check we're going for with Zhang. What about somone that can give him some rounds like Jermain Franklin? Otto Wallin? I mean I'm all for baptism by fire so I would welcome that fight vs Zhang but if I were his manager I probably wouldn't take it just yet
Agree with you that if I was his manager I would veto the hell out of it, but from a fan perspective I would love to see it. If he wins his reputation shoots way up and he becomes a fringe contender. If he loses though he will get blown to bits which would also be exciting to see. Zhang has less to gain from this though. If he wins, great, he beat a completely unproven prospect and gets no respect. If he loses he's finished. I'd actually veto this fight if I was either of their managers, but as a fan I love these matchups way more than ones where a prospect is so heavily favored.
Fighting weak to mid gatekeepers like Charles Martin/Yoka or Jermaine Franklin or Wallin as @Pepsi Dioxide mentioned should be Itauma's focus for now. Itauma has only beaten good journeyman, not even weak gatekeepers. Itauma might be able to beat Zhang now as Zhang has some glaring flaws and weaknesses that can be taken advantage of by a good enough fighter. However, Zhang has literally knocked down every decent fighter he has fought in the pro ranks - his power and timing is really no joke. It wouldn't be a good idea for Itauma to match up against one of the most dangerous punchers in the sport so early. So, for that reason I have to back an early Zhang stoppage for now but I could see Itauma winning if Zhang doesn't get him out of there early but then again we don't know how good Itauma's stamina, chin, durability, heart and will is. It would be a very dangerous and risky fight for Itauma to take this soon in his career after beating a good journeyman in McKean to a weak contender and a genuinely murderous puncher in Zhang.
I keep getting flashbacks of Haye vs Thompson...in fact Itauma has about as many fights as Haye did when he fought Thompson
At this point though, I don’t have faith in Zhang winning anything. I think Moses would part this Red Sea and retire Zhang.
I'd actually like to see it, but at this point in his career Itauma should be able to take it, we have seen Parker and Kabayel both beat him in different ways and Zhang is not going to get any better. Itauma just has to play it safe and make it to the later rounds which he should be able to do. Saying that he hasn't had a proper chin test yet and Zhang has heavy hands and could easily send a Itauma to the canvas if he gets overconfident or loses concentration.
And nevertheless he can ruin your career in a single isolated punch. I would consider it a stupid movement if Itauma decides to fight Zhang, there are better options, like the many options other posters have already written here. Why roll a dice when you dont have to?
Itauma beats a few corpses and mediocre journeymen and we're putting him in with heavy handed fringe contenders? Cmon... There's levels to this **** - it takes time to develop a prospect and throwing them that far off the deep end makes absolutely no sense. Itauma could go on to great things, but right now Zhang finishes him early.
I got Itauma. I think Zhang is great against other slow plodding big men, but quick agile smaller hws is his kryptonite.
I take your point about levels, but babying a prospect too long will lead to regression, just look at Hrgovic. Also, throwing someone in the deep end young means they will learn a ton from their experience even if they lose, and will have plenty of time in their careers to rebuild and come back stronger. Dubois lost to Joyce and Usyk when he was young, has learned from the experience, and is now at the top at 26 years old. It's also hard for me to class Zhang as anything above a strong gatekeeper at this point. Joyce presented a literal perfect style matchup for him and Wilder is a gatekeeper level fighter himself. He lost to Hrgovic, Parker and Kabayel; good fighters, but if Zhang is a real contender he should've beaten at least one of them. (Hrgovic isn't even a contender himself anymore.) It's a big jump for Itauma sure, but one I feel he has a real chance of winning.
