Without stamina enhancers Povektin tires and gets outboxed by the relentlessly mobile Bugner. Coiln Hart said Bugner is one of the most underrated Heavies of all time
Bugner fought Ali twice and Frazier once and all three fights went to the cards. Joe didn't embarrass himself though he was criticized for being overly cautious in the second Ali fight.
Povetkin ices him. Bugner was a decent boxer, but he didn’t get full extension on his punches, which is the last thing you want against Povetkin, having to be in mid range when you attempt to get work off.
I think Povetkin would be the aggressor and Bugner would be on the defensive too much. Joe probably goes the distance but I can see Alexander being comfortably ahead on the cards.
The answer to this is the same as the answer to almost any Joe Bugner v... question - it depends on which Bugner turns up. On his day he would have been a handful for all but the very best heavyweights of all time.
Among Ali's non-HOF opponents, I actually found the first scrap with Bugner to be one of his more interesting fights. Always thought that getting Ali to come forward might not be his comfort zone, and Bugner did that all night. Joe didn't quite have the offense to pull it off, but I thought his gameplan was at least the beginnings of a blueprint on how to deal with Ali. Would have loved to see a guy like Holmes employ Bugner's strategy of constant lateral movement against Ali, pumping the jab and making Ali chase. Anyway, I'd go with Povetkin to beat Bugner by UD. Bugner may have his moments, but probably shells up too much and gets out-worked.
