I'm not a fan of AJ but AJ would have too much for Dempsey. Size, reach, speed, jab and power. Boxing has evolved too much since then for Dempsey to win.
...gimme a little more education. It might be disingenuous for the first fight, but he had almost a year to train for fight two...or, was Jack just 'past it' by then? His inactivity was surely on him regardless. I love watching Dempsey fight, but his reign is surely one of the thinnest in heavyweight history. Willard maybe remembered as his best but more because of the disparity in size and because he'd beaten the 'bogeyman', Carpentier was a wonderful boxer and a fine win regardless of difference in size...Firpo? A face first brawler with the ring iq of a honey badger. Made for Jack. Miske, Brennan, Gibbons? Sharkey? More a rogues gallery than a murderers row? Those suggesting Dempsey brutalises a modern fighter like AJ, and one with his attributes should perhaps revisit this record, because he wasn't blowing these guys away inside a round. Full disclosure, I am a massive Dempsey fan, my dog is called Dempsey, Jack Dempsey when he's in trouble!! But I do confess to knowing little about Jack's time between the Tunney fights, it's a long time ago since I did some serious research on him. His inactivity always seemed to be his choice, and he always seemed an anomalous character, a dervish in the ring, as Tyson quipped, he fought like he hadn't eaten in a week, but a somewhat reluctant champion at times...should his reluctance colour Tunneys wins? He hadn't 'retired', the public clamoured for him to fight, he simply chose not to. And, the drawing of the colour line somewhat taints his legacy.
Dempsey KO mid-rounds. I can see him swarming all over AJ while not getting tagged clean much inside. Joshua doesn't seem to focus well in the exchanges and gets caught too often with big, flush shots from moderately skilled guys. I think Dempsey's feet & head movement get him inside on AJ's chest where he works relentlessly, putting concussive punches through Joshua's guard at practically every opportunity.
I can see that as a potential outcome if AJ isn't on point with his jab and uppercut. If he let's Dempsey 'in' he likely gets mugged.
Well no, not really at all… Dempsey looked great and pulled off much higher level stuff then Ruiz has, Dempsey understands where his weight is, balance, proper combinations like all top pros not sure what he’s missing? what he has over Ruiz is that he knows how to fight inside for real, get behind his shoulder and actually BOB N WEAVE that is an actual lost skill.
Obviously size isn't everything but it is a huge advantage when comparing Dempsey and AJ. AJ has his flaws but he was a good fighter in his prime.
Whilst I agree Dempsey was past prime for Tunney, I disagree he was as far removed from his prime as Holmes was vs Tyson. Firstly, iirc, Dempsey was 31 and 32 vs Tunney, relative to Holmes 38 vs Tyson. Secondly, inbetween the Tunney fights, Dempsey beat the worlds #2 rated HW in Jack Sharkey. I doubt the Holmes that fought Tyson would have beaten the next best HW in the world (after Tyson) that night and he certainly never went on to beat the #2 HW.
