Jones is a much better P4P fighter than Sharkey historically but I am going with the natural heavyweight here, Sharkey.
RJJ would have been a formidable heavyweight in that era. Remember, Jones, with day before weigh ins was 180-185ish on fight night. So he likely fights at light heavyweight and heavyweight in the 1930s.
Sharkeys peak was better but he was that for only a small part of his career. Loughran I, Scott and Schmeling I Sharkey should be handidly favored. Average RJJ should be handidly favored over most other versions of Sharkey including lineal champ Sharkey.
Weird thing here is Godfrey had a problem with small elite fighters and was really good against bigger ones. Based on a small sample size but theres a trend there.
Good Lord, Jones would spark out Sharkey in no time. Jack didn't hold a single physical advantage over Roy, who held several over Sharkey. Roy would pot shot him, turn him inside out, and concuss him. It would take 5 rounds max.
Shameus, Shameus, Shameus... No simply no, let's debate it this is an official slap with teh glove or are thee a dandy?
I have to pick Sharkey. I can’t see Roy taking his punch. Jack falls into that sweet spot of size and speed that I think would undo Jones. At Sharkey’s best he weighed 197 consistently, and he possessed solid speed. He catches Roy in an exchange and Roy gets hurt and finished. Roy started as a middle weight and was great. Then naturally or unnaturally moved up to 168 and he looked phenomenal. Probably the best super middleweight ever. Then he bumped up to 175 naturally or unnaturally- and was still great but not invincible. Lou Del Valle dropped him and he began to lose at this weight later in career. He also famously struggled with Griffith in their first fight. Now you’re asking him to fight another 22 pounds higher I know different era and weigh in rules. But Roy’s Chin is going to be checked. This isn’t clumsy 225 pound guy like Ruiz. Roy may be winning early or looking good but it’s a bridge too far this matchup
