I agree but I'd have favoured Sugar Ray to do likewise. I don't know much about LaMotta and don't care to but that result elevates him above anywhere McCallum ever went to. Mike then wins the next two in the trilogy.
McCallum too skilled for La Motta but Jake's durability is well known. He drops a clear decision to Mike.
Ray was conceding a double digit weight disadvantage for the fight he lost, which is quite large especially for a ww. It's a testament to Ray's greatness that he would be willing to concede that amount of weight to a big, strong mw contender, let alone be expected to win.
Yeah, to me that’s like saying if Bob Foster had lost one of six fights against Joe Frazier (by decision) while Bob came in at 170 (Ray was 144 1/2 in the fight he lost to Jake, who couldn’t be arsed to even come all the way down to the middleweight limit) and saying ‘well, Bob did lose that one fight so …’ Ray as a welter (and not even a full 147-pound one) proved over the course of 65 rounds — and in every second of those rounds, Robinson was the lighter man and often significantly so, enough to span three weight divisions in today’s world at times — that he was the better man. Jake got by once. I don’t think he does it against McCallum, who was bigger than Ray (albeit not as great). Many of LaMotta’s best wins saw him coming in at light heavy (above 160) against welterweights would would be in the low 150s … if that. He wouldn’t be able to handle a fighter of McCallum’s class who would have been a true middleweight.
Nah after seeing Kalambay school McCallum i can't favour McCallum over Robinson's blistering hand speed and great footwork Robinson would beat him to the punch all night long too much speed. I do think though that McCallum would beat LaMotta on points aggressive come forward fighters didn't really bother McCallum too much he dealt with Collins, Jackson.
A much slower, less powerful Lamotta managed to beat a prime Robinson and fight close on several other occasions. I'm not guarantying it but I would favor McCallum.
LaMotta is more aggressive hes a swarmer that throws alot of punches and as its already been mentioned in this thread Robinson's loss to LaMotta was when he was a Welterweight and LaMotta was weighing in as a Middleweight. I think McCallum gets a tad overrated in H2H match ups in all honestly he's a great fighter don't get me wrong but I don't think he's quite on the same level as the FAB 4. Who I think all of them would've beaten him including Duran when they were originally supposed to fight in 1983.
Styles makes fight, SRR struggled with infighters that would push, butt their heads below his neck and smother most of his shots. I don't think McCallum was exactly like that.
Meh, never saw much in SRR. Looks a bit sloppy and undersized for MW on film. McCullum would chew him up. Hell, I'd pick Lamar Parks over him. But old people need something to cheer about lest they spend their days shaking their canes at clouds.
Not really undersized, his best weight was welterweight def but he fought more on middleweight, compare Gene Fullmer and Julian Jackson, then see how SRR and McCallum deals with both. SRR did lose but managed to deliver a devastating ko in the second fight, unlike McCallum who finished Julian quick but with a debatable stoppage.
How do you score points in a hoagie eating competition? Cuz that's the only contest in which Lamotta would ever outpoint McCallum.
