Because the best fighter he fought at 168 was Plant, and the rest of his opponents were C level SMW's.

Toney's timing, accuracy and counterpuncher were superior to Canelo's and that would have made the difference. In my opinion, the Toney who defeated Barkley in the super middleweight with a perfect performance would have been too much even for a champion like Canelo. Toney clear on points.

Prime for prime Toney all day

A lazy Toney (cutting weight too fast) then Canelo

If this is fantasy best v best, as all fantasy matches should be, Toney confuses and befuddles Canelo, beats him up on the inside with short sharp hooks and uppercuts and simply wears Canelo's punches like a comfortable sweatshirt. I think Toney does what Floyd did but with more drama, he will stun and stumble Canelo at times and win with his back on the ropes, from the middle of the ring, anywhere.

I don't actually think there's many fighters out there that would beat the very best James Toney, I mean his chin was literally uncrackable, it's just such a shame his discipline and preparation didn't match his obvious generational talent
