Been watching the single long footage of Angott defending his title against Slugger White and he seems to somewhat have better clinch game than lightweight Duran. From my observation he didn't really need to lull his opponents with a jab,he could enter with an instant clinch to prevent the attack or begin with a 3 punch combo then enter,he also used overhooks more than Duran and despite it limiting his firepower,he was granted a safer spot to alternate between holding and hitting. The Duran that fought De Jesus the second time also uses the same technique at times, but he's - less protected on the chin, got caught by De Jesus at times but his durability and head roll clutched him. - has to lull with his jab and feints to actually initiate the clinch - held less tight than Angott, also spent less time in the clinch This content is protected This content is protected Opinion on how Manos De Piedra deals with The Clutch?
Bump. @George Crowcroft @Flo_Raiden @Saintpat @Greg Price99 @Dorrian_Grey @Seamus @Dynamicpuncher @bolo specialist @Journeyman92 I summon all of thee.
I can’t with clear conscious pick against Roberto Duran in this fight at lightweight. He was a near-irresistible force and the guy I think most likely to beat him at 135 is Pernell Whitaker due to styles — Duran had some trouble with movers and the southpaw thing might give Sweet Pea an edge. That being said, Sammy Angott is a handful for anyone and nobody is going to look good against him. He would nullify much of Roberto’s work inside and it could resemble a rough-and-tumble wrestling match at times. I do think that Angott’s best weight was really 140 — many of his best wins were at that weight or around it — and I figure this fantasy fight is set for lightweight since both were champs in that division. And thus I can’t pick against Duran, who was very likely the best lightweight that ever lived. Roberto would do the cleaner work and inflict more damage, but a lot of rounds would be up for grabs, so maybe 8-4-3 in rounds where you could make an argument for Angott if you favored his spoiling style. Dang, I wish I could see this one just to see what Duran could do with such a stubborn guy who knew how to throw off his inside game.
Yeah,I want to see what kind of tactics Ray Arcel would give Duran to beat Angott, especially because Angott has the same height as Duran with the longer reach,I couldn't really imagine how Duran beats him.
I think Duran would've exploited his massive physical advantages in speed and power to come away from exchanges after landing the cleaner shots. Angott wouldn't be completely outclassed, but Duran's difference in class is what wins him the day.
Some more strengths of Angott I observed again, will be observing Duran after I'm done scoring Galindez vs Lopez.
I think so,in the inside Duran, for me had the more varied offense as Angott looks more to spoil and win "easy", unfortunately you don't see much clever fighters like Angott again, maybe John Ruiz?
No, I don't think they're too similar. Outside of the rough and negative clinching, they have little in common imo. I think Angott is pretty unique on film, but I'd say he was closest to maybe Gene Fullmer.
Thinking again,I think so,I'm overrating questionable heart Ruiz... For me though, the most similar fighter on film with Angott might be Eusebio Pedroza for some fights,he had limited footage on film but from what I see in the Slugger White title defense,he seems similar to Pedroza when fighting against Lockridge and Laporte.
