I don't know how many times there has been a thread for this matchup,but I don't care. Super bantamweight,15 rounds. Prime for prime,so Gomez from the Zarate/Yum fights and Jofre from Harada II/Medel fights,who wins?
It's a spectacular matchup. I usually say Gomez hands down for any fantasy matchup at 122, but prime Jofre is one of the few guys with all the tools to defeat him. I'd still make Gomez the favorite though. Bigger man than Jofre and more athletic and dynamic. But Jofre was as complete as they come from a technical standpoint, he was durable, and he had devastating power in both hands. He's certainly a very live underdog. It's just hard to go against Gomez's dominance at 122.
This matchup gave me feels of the small man version of Duran vs Leonard I lol, Jofre was truly the Duran of his era,becoming the scourge of his own division undefeated,then got his streak broken and came back strong,both also won titles against bigger men at 37 years of age.
Gomez was actually more like Duran style-wise than Jofre was. And Gomez had a similar level of meanness to him. Unsurprisingly, Duran and Gomez were good friends.
Yeah,and somehow,maybe a coincidence I heard that Duran was a fan of Harada who's the rival of Jofre. But despite Gomez's slick movements and precise punching,I find Jofre's infighting and career being more similar to Duran,I dunno about Gomez's infighting so can't make a comment on that. Either way though, Jofre was perhaps the earliest pioneers of aggressive,modern boxer punching,with the high guard,deadly combinations on the inside that lands on all the perfect targets,and a good jab and cross when he needs to outbox his opponents,last but not least he had a monstrous body work and uppercut that would rip apart any bantamweight in history. From what I could describe above,I cannot think more other than Duran,Chavez,Olivares and Barney Ross,atleast in my head lol.
They’re separated by a tier or two… I enjoy Gomez but he’s not Eder Jofre good, it’s a bit out of his reach.
Fighters like Pep, Napoles and Duran earned being called “Slick” Gomez was not “Slick” as it’s understood to be in boxing terms.
How much of the early Gomez have you watched? Gomez was extremely elusive when he chose to be. He eventually fell in love with his power and became more a puncher-boxer, but before that he was absolutely brilliant at integrating offense and defense.
I honestly think that by the time Jofre fought Harada 2nd he was struggling too much with his weight ,,, I think Chris has discussed this before as Jofre just wasnt the same for that fight,which in part led to his retirenment.. but anyway '66 simply isnt Prime Jofre .. I'll take Gomez but wouldnt put a nickel on it
There's also Jofre from the Medel fights that I mentioned too. Jofre's trainer also said that he was more prepared for the rematch,compared to that first fight.
