Let's go back in time to the year 2000, when “Iron” Mike Tyson's fight was planned in Finland. At that time, the Finnish heavyweight boxing champion was Tony “The Viking” Halme, who had also become known as a professional wrestler under the name Ludvig Borga. This content is protected
The name Tony Halme is vaguely familiar, but I don't remember anything about about him potentially fighting Tyson back then. Halme did manage to get a SD win over a 231 pound Iran Barkley. That was the 4th loss of Iran's 6 fight losing streak to close out his career. According to Wiki, Halme was an athlete, author, actor, singer, and a member of Finnish Parliament. Sounds like he lived quite the life. I remember Holyfield planned a similar fight against an obscure opponent near the end of his career which never took place. It was to be against Sammy Retta in Retta's home country of Ethiopia. Neither of these fights, on paper anyway, would have been remotely competitive.
Tyson would have killed him. Would have been like Bert Cooper-Joe Savage but even more savage! This content is protected
They were hyping Savage up as a bare knuckle brawler with a record of 42-0 (41 KOs), or something like that. I always wondered what the truth was on any of that. Has anyone ever produced a single name of a Joe Savage KO victim from his supposed bare knuckle days I wonder? May have just been a complete sham, but I was legitimately curious about what Cooper-Savage would look like, and I think a lot of others were too.
Tony Halme was an interesting and controversial character. He was at various times a pro boxer, WWF wrestler, MMA guy and participated in some other combat sports type things. Also a bodybuilder and bodyguard for the band Cheap Trick and Gene Simmons of KISS. He was also elected into the Finnish parliament despite (or maybe because of) being a Nazi (he had an SS tattoo). A raid of his home after an incident involving an unlicensed firearm being discharged turned up large amounts of steroids were found (leading to not only possession but trafficking charges, I think) and a blood test from one of his fights (MMA, I think) showed that he was loaded up with painkillers and amphetamines. He was deported from the U.S. after multiple firearm offenses. Halme’s health began to fail due to severe alcoholism and he took his own life by self-inflicted gunshot at age 47. As for video, he had a hit on the Finnish charts with this: This content is protected
