I was a big Calzaghe fan but he wouldn't have beaten a prime RJJ and those interviews say it all "come down to SMW" and "fight on showtime" Joe didn't hold the cards and didn't call the shots. He was unrealistic and knew it's just noise and promotion and would never happen with those demands.

 

.....Jones was a free agent in late 2000 and said he was "definitely moving back down to 168lbs" after the Harding fight in Sep. That was the whole point...

 

Joe's career is similar to Joshua; fight a shot 41 year old ATG (Roy), decision a solid minor champ of the era (Parker for Joshua, Kessler for Joe), NEVER travel as an underdog, claim everyone you didn't fight ducked you.

And that's a career.

 

Calzaghe is a boxing legend. Still living rent free in peoples heads

 

Roid Jones is a ducker.

 

Jones was not age 41. He was still in his 30s and went on to fight for years afterwards. Joe was age 36 and he retired after his one-sided schooling of Jones.

 

He was 39.9 years old.

Getting knocked down by the 40 year old ghost of Roy Jones who'd been iced back to back 5 years prior is not a "one sided schooling".

The fact that that's a big deal for Joe's career shows how massively overrated he is.

 

Prime Roy would have pieced up Joe. Keep it real.

 

Roy Jones, prime or not, could only beat Joe Calzaghe if he was allowed to juice. If RJJ had to fight clean he loses to Slappy happy

Some haters will never give Calzaghe the respect he earned in the ring, perhaps because he's a British boxer. 46-0.

 

Prime Joe would’ve worn jones out with his volume. Once Joe got his rhythm down he would’ve out worked jones.

 

I remember seeing all this at the time. Let's not get revisionist here, and add some context:
In 2000/2001 Jones was the P4P no.1 and a dominant multi-weight division star. Calzaghe held a lowly regarded belt and had a reputation for padding his record in the safety of his home country. No one was clamouring to fight him because, frankly, he was an unfashionable champion with constant home advantage, who wasn’t especially high on the radar of fans or fighters. Plus he and Jones were on different networks and in different divisions. And, like it or not, it was the era when boxers were expected to go to the States for big fights. I think the notion that Jones was somehow ducking Joe, if that’s what this post is intended to show, is ludicrous. Literally no one was asking for that fight and it wasn’t a realistic prospect which is why, with respect, I suspect Joe was calling for it, knowing it wouldn’t actually happen.
Joe was a very good fighter but context is everything here. He fought and beat Jones when Jones was obviously finished. And the same when Hopkins had clearly lost. I don’t think these are coincidences that neither fight happened before then. I remember reading a quote by Max Kellerman from around this time which went along the lines of: ‘Jones would beat Hopkins, Michalczewski and Calzaghe in the same night and you can choose the hand he uses to do it. And I’m serious about that by the way.’ This fight was not a serious prospect at the time - and everyone involved knew it.
