James Toney vs 70s George Foreman (15 rounds) - challenger withstanding

You actually had a point for this, although I doubt a TKO, Toney can pull off an upset decision.

But on the other side, Toney was also very inconsistent we don't know what version he'll come out to fight Big George.

 

73-74 GF could be dangerous for 3 rounds, after that Toney should be in control. Even in the first 3 rounds early 70s GF probably wouldn't be able to hit JT anywhere except the arms and shoulders. The later 70s Clancy trained GF might be more effective? He was more disciplined and controlled. I agree with you also that JT would probably stop an exhausted 73-74 GF. It may not take long because GF would probably be swinging wildly over the head of the much shorter JT, and taking some body shots from the rolling/slipping JT. Missing big, and taking shots to the body would probably fatigue GF faster than he fatigued against Ali.

I got George by TKO after being slightly behind on the scorecards then landing that right uppercut while toney ducks into it.

 

No-one is getting KO'd here if it's post Rumble in the Jungle George. Either Toney slicks his way to a clear points win over a befuddled George, or Foreman manages to land one of his bombs on the mostly static Toney (not Impossible) and decapitates him before the final bell.

Post Zaire George was a bit better with no expanding all his energy early and he won't make the same mistake as he did with Ali when confronted by a Toney lying on his ropes. Landing a clean shot on him though will be hard though.

 

Toney was impossible to hit solid. That’s why he sounds so coherent today.

George couldn’t avoid a punch because he was too wild and clumsy. That’s why he sounded so garbled in the years preceding his death.

 

Foreman TKO in 7. Toney is a tough & durable slickster (who was still very effective at HW) but I don't think he can pull it off here. Foreman's jab (more than his size & power) will be very problematic for Toney as it was sharp, heavy & timely accurate.

His shoving tactics & long-guard will throw Toney off (similar as it did to Frazier), because while Toney won't be coming at Foreman, (like Frazier did) he'll be directly in front of him (as Toney wasn't a mover). This is just a bad as trying to pressure Foreman, as you're still right in front of him.

I don't like the idea of Toney standing in front of Foreman, trying to counter & potshot all night thinking he's going to do effective damage. A poor man's Foreman in Peter hurt Toney multiple times in both fights, going on to drop & completely outbox him in the rematch. If he struggled that much against a carbon copy, he doesn't have much to stop the real deal.

 

Coming back to this thread,hear me out but young Foreman when trained by Liston might only lose an SD,he actually had good fundamentals and Liston would probably taught him how to bully smaller guys for the Toney fight.

Toney would not last more than 2 rounds, and if he is lucky he will see 3rd round but thats it.

 

James having very limited movement, at Heavyweight, would leave him standing in the pocket with the power puncher.

James' eyes are too sharp for Foreman, but could his body/arms withstand those power shots for 12 rounds?
