Jeff Fenech says “boxing is a better sport” after one of the great sporting injustices was finally set right.

Fenech has been retroactively awarded a fourth world title after the World Boxing Council (WBC) overturned the controversial draw in his first fight against Azumah Nelson in 1991. The decision to award the bout and belt to Fenech came at the WBC convention in Acapulco, Mexico, more than three decades after the original decision.

Fenech dominated Nelson in their first fight in Las Vegas, but one judge scored the bout a draw and the other two were split. It meant Fenech missed out on the WBC super-featherweight title.
The great man Jeff Fenech commented the following.
“It feels even greater tonight because of the three legends who presented my belt to me. I won, I’ve known that for 30 years. It’s a long time coming.”
“I never thought this would happen,” he said. “Everything happens for a reason. This makes boxing a better sport.
“We have technology and if there’s a fight where I won 10 rounds out of 12 – then I won the fight.”

Jeff was lighting him up like a Christmas tree Azumah was lucky in wasn't a 15 rounder as he was ready to go in the 12th.

    Jeff punched Azumah’s head in.

Still the most cooked decision I have ever seen.

The craziest thing is that Fenech was actually past prime for this bout imo. The fact he broke both hands against Villisana, had his retirement and then fought ATG Azumah at his fourth weight class and (should've) won clearly is absolutely insane.

It has to suck when your crowning achievement, the one which would define your career, gets taken away from you by a bad decision. Even if you know in your heart that you won, it wouldn't take away the pain from it. That's why I felt for Kovalev as well when he fought against Ward, though that fight was much closer than Fenech's draw to Azmah.

What nonsense. Is the WBC going to award Azumah Nelson ANOTHER WBC Super Featherweight title belt for REGAINING the championship and beating the snot out of Fenech in their rematch?

You get a new one every time you regain the title, after all.

Ridiculous comment. Close fight plus Azumah damn near killed him in the rematch.

How is it ridiculous? Fenech came out of retirement after 2 years due to hand injuries had one tune up and moved up in weight and punched Azumah’s head in. Most people had Fenech winning 9 to 10 rounds.
