Tszyu had fought three rounds in two and a half years leading into the fight. And they still needed a hometown ref to deprive him of his title.
Brother Olu, Phillips was a very good fighter and Kostya underestimated him. It's also worth noting that Phillips tested positive for PEDs when he came over to the UK to fight Hatton which I believe was only his 2nd fight outside of the US Phillips would've knocked Twink's head off and he fought at a much higher level than Twink did or ever would've dared do But that's just one fight and, as said, Kostya would've been arrested for legal homicide against Twink and he wouldn't have merely knocked his head off he would've sent it hurtling into deep space Even I have to admit to being guilty of seriously overrating Twink. I previously believed he was a P4P top 10 type of talent with a garbage resume but I got that one very wrong. If I'm being honest, I think he would be lucky to make the top 15-20
I don't see anyone at the top of 140 now with the style to beat Tszyu. Tszyu is a boxer puncher, with the emphasis on puncher and the two times he lost he fought guys that stood with him, threw a lot of punches, roughed him up, were willing to trade and back him up. That's not Teo who's a counter puncher, or Haney who is a boxer/counter puncher, Barboza Jr too doesn't have the style to win. Matias probably stylistically has the best chance with his aggression and willingness to trade. But he's too basic, too likely to get hit and that's not a good thing against Kosta. As for Tank moving up? Again wrong style and let's be honest he never takes that fight in a million years.
Brother Serge we are agreed that Cool Vince Philips or simply Cool Vince as he was called in the Hood was a very good fighter. Kostya Tszyu was also a great fighter someone I had a great deal of respect for. I was actually ring side on a scouting mission to watch Ricky Hatton close up when Tszyu defended his title against Hatton. This great gave Hatton a boxing lesson until he rapidly disintegrated and became old that night. The lower shot to the balls the referee allowed Hatton to get away with, did not help however we all liked the lovable Mancunian. As for Tank he is a special fighter and talent and he is the only one of today’s crop I could see beating Kostya Tsyzu. As for his son the imitation is no where near as good as the original.
Indeed, Brother Olu. Phillips was only stopped x 4 in 61 fights and 3 of those inside the distance defeats came up at 147. To be fair, Hatton fought like a man possessed that night in the hostile cauldron f Manchester Arena in front of 22,000. But Kostya has a lot of miles on the clock with that extremely extensive amateur career fighting at the elite level and a very high level for a very long time and his body was falling apart on him and it was a gruelling long distance fight and having to deal with Hatton's dirty tactics didn't help matters Re. Twink vs Kostya. Aside from Kostya being a completely different level of fighter to Twink or anyone he fought, he's also too big for him. It's not even a knock on Twink that he would knock him out because Kostya is one of the greatest offensive forces the lower divisions have ever seen and in addition to that vicious one shot power he was a deadly finisher and combination puncher blessed with really underrated speed and unerring accuracy.
