Steve Smoger, because he would let the guys fight ! Because of that the one I hated the most was Joe Cortez.
Lane,Smoger and Mercante were great refs,but my personal favorite was Arthur Donovan reffing Zivic vs Armstrong,I don't like to play dirty but Donovan was the pinnacle of an old school ref,he'd let you do anything and stop the fight when one is too hurt to continue.
Mills Lane and Richard Steele. They were Marines like my dad, and gave me their autograph. They were super nice people.
Mercante Sr is my favorite as I grew up watching him in some big fights. The one I dislike the most is Diamond Dave parris as I have never seen anyone as corrupt, biased and incompetent as that pièce of filth. Pure scumbag
Big fan of Frank Capucchino and double S Steve Smoger. They stayed out of the way and let guys fight. Mitch Halpern was also one of the best. Now Joe Cortez was one of the worst. Always running off at the mouth and not letting guys fight on the inside. Guy wanted to be as famous as the fighters. Couldn't stand him.
Davey Pearl deserves a mention, handled the Heavies well as I remember. He saved Hearns at the perfect time from getting hurt really bad by Ray Leonard.
Sometimes I catch myself looking at Ruby Goldstein prancing around the ring instead of watching the fighters. I like Mark Conn because to me he was invisible.
