An interesting quote by Jack Dempsey:

'Though he has whipped everyone he has faced, compared with the champions of the past, Rocky Marciano is hardly more than a second-rater. I don't think Marciano is great. I hate to say so because The Rock is a fine man, honest, clean-living, ambitious, one of the nicest guys you want to meet. But in my book he couldn't carry the bucket for some champions of the past.'

“Dempsey told Kofoed that he thinks John L. Sullivan would have beaten Marciano, Jim Corbett would have outpointed Rocky, Bob Fitzsimmons would have scored a technical knockout, Jim Jeffries would have flattened Marciano, Jack Johnson would have KO’d Rocky, Jess Willard would have outpointed Rocky, Gene Tunney would have won on technical knockout, Max Schmeling would have beaten Marciano, so would Jack Sharkey, while Max Baer would have KO’d Rocky. Joe Louis, in his prime, would have stopped Marciano.”

“Of the former champions Marciano would have beaten, Dempsey lists Marvin Hart, Tommy Burns, Primo Carnera and Jim Braddock.”

“Dempsey lists the faults which he thinks detracts from Marciano. Among them are Rocky’s clumsy footwork and lack of boxing skill. Rocky’s build; 5’10 and a reach of only 68 inches, is against him, Dempsey says, and he has to get in close for a punch. Having no boxing skill, he is easy to hit as he wades in, Dempsey points out.”

“All in all, it is not a very complimentary picture which Dempsey paints of Marciano, but observers will agree that most of it is true.”

My take on that is that results speak for themselves.

This Dempsey guy shows his ignorance when he cites Marciano's unimpressive height and reach.

As any old timer would know, size is basically irrelevant in heavyweight boxing. Marciano would beat inflated "heavyweights" with their fake muscles like Baer and Louis.

Was Dempsey even aware of what happened to big guys like Willard and Fulton? I doubt it...

Dempsey didn't think much of the 1950's heavies, it is true. He thought they were a collection of has-beens, over the hill types and white hopes without any of the goods. He even consulted with Layne but left in not well disguised disgust at Layne's training habits.

He was a great student of the game.

Marciano could have very well beaten Dempsey, whether you favor him or not. And Marciano certainly could have beaten everyone that Dempsey beat. In fact, I think Marciano beat better fighters than Dempsey beat.

Disrespect towards Fireman Jim Flynn will not be tolerated in this forum.

Demspey climbed out the ring rather than fight Joe Jeanette. He admitted to being afraid of Sam Langford, and failed to defend against Wills.

I guess in his day being afraid to fight black men was all right, but by Marciano's time, things had changed, and it was admirable that not only did he fight anyone, but he did a benefit for Ezzard Charles, and he developed real friendships with Ali and Louis. Ali said something like, " He was the only white fighter that every treated me like that."

Anyway, Dempsey was not the real world champion, he was the world champion of white people, whereas Marciano was undisputed.

Wasn’t the JJ situation because they wouldn’t pay him or they tricked him on the opponent? I forget… Langford was too early in his career in fairness and Wills… Wills is a can of worms no one will ever close.

This is a strange post because is it from Dempsey direct or someone who is claiming Dempsey said this ? It seems unlike Dempsey to talk badly about anyone not to mention he seemed to have been friends of sort w Rocky ... the post's source seems fishy to me ... (not the person who posted it here )

You might be right, I don’t know I’m not Jack Dempsey but personally from what I’ve read and seen and context to when those fights could happen I think JD probably beats Langford right? Or losses a meaningless UD in his early career… when was Joe meant to fight him prime for prime from what I’ve seen and know I think JD splatters him, when he could’ve fought Wills… honestly based on film JD again.

But we can't really award a fighter victories against fighters he declined to fight.
