It depends on how liberal (or not) you are in characterizing some1 as a "puncher" - for example, I probably wouldn't have characterized Olson or Ortega as a puncher myself, even if neither 1 was necessarily featherfisted either. having said that, DeMarco, Miceli, Bratton, Basilio, & Cartier should satisfy any criteria to be considered punchers IMO, & other fighters like Bell, Costner, Jack, Greco, Young, Hairston, Small, Martinez, & Varona should at least be considered IMO.
Hi Buddy. So the OP is wondering what puchers Gavilan faced, as much as like Basilio, and I like him a lot, not sure if I would regard him as a puncher he stopped roughly half the fighters he beat, so respectful enough, but I see him as more of a attrition based fighter, his fighting style is, to my eye combining limitless stamina, an unbending will, with a ceaseless body bombardment, the fights we have him don't normally show explosive power, the anomaly in the room is he decked Gavilan, something Ray couldn't achieve, so yea, he could punch and hurt, but not maybe KO with a single blow. the opponents that I think Gavilan faced who could punch would include. Durando, Williams, Turner, Lausse, and De Marco. stay safe ETM, your posts are eagerly awaited in my house, chat soon buddy.
I'd forgotten that Hairston had bombed out an up & coming Paul Pender in 3. That should put him in the punchers category for sure I reckon.
Well - you're 100% entitled to your own definition of puncher, but that's far, far too liberal for me. You've listed Joe MIceli there. Why was Miceli a puncher? His KO% is less than fifty percent even if you discount all loses and draws...he didn't fight to a particularly high level (120 bouts, zero for a world title), mostly at a level it's a string of UD10s. Jay Fullmer was a very good stoppage, but Fullmer was not a good fighter, easy to hit and Miceli had to drop him three times before the referee pulled him. He has a couple like that, sort of accumulation stoppages, that are quite impressive, but not, definitely not puncher material for me. The idea is to identify a sort of quill of punchers who would really test a guy's chin rather than list everyone who ever scored a couple of highlight reel worthy KOs - otherwise you just end up with massive long lists for everyone you consider, most of it adding no meaningful data. But that's me, you work with your longer lists, probably quite good fun.
pretty much the 1 thing he was known for was the power in his left uppercut. his difficulty in following thru on stoppages stemmed more from a lack of finishing skills & increasingly notorious lack of conditioning as his career progressed. This content is protected
