Anyone rate Moore in your top 5 p4p or higher? I have him outside the top ten but make the case if you have him higher or even the GOAT.
Out of the Top 10 for me. Depending the circumstances and criteria Archie hangs around Top 15 or Top 20. But I have no problem if somebody puts him as fringe Top 10.
I can think of 10ish fighters that I would rate above Moore. 1. SRR 2. Greb 3. Langford 4. Charles 5. Armstrong 6. Walker 7. Ali 8. Duran 9. B. Leonard 10. Pacquiao I think Moore is more appropriate for the 11-13 range.
Huh… how do you rate PAC and Ali over Archie Moore? I’m admittedly a casual but Ali especially seems a bit odd, especially for a P4P list and seeing as how Moore fought ATG’s across 3 divisions for decades.
I think simply by the level of opposition that Ali defeated over his career. It was utterly ridiculous IMO.
As was Archie Moores but across multiple weights… he had a better 160lbs run then Hagler IMO and that was only when he was finding his footing then at 175lbs he cut his teeth against other P4Pers like Bivins and Johnson he went up and made a better HW career then some full timers we rate pretty highly he has a resume with extreme depth much like Emile Griffith just tons of recognisable names scattered through it… Alis signature win over Frazier in 2 was a bit compromised no? Norton was just a guy in the division… George Foreman is a good name but Liston is a so-so win just IMO and given when it happened Ali is no doubt the greatest HW or minimum #2 and one you can based on that fairly IMO rate P4P highly… but comparing him to a guy who fought across 3 decades and 3 weight classes against Iron till he was either 49 or 51 isn’t comparable to me at least in a P4P sense.
Ali is the arguable GOAT in a division w/o a weight limit & he beat 2 fighters who were themselves considered candidates for GOAT status until Ali burst their bubbles. Pacquiao set a new record for titles won in the most weight classes, & even allowing for the existence of more classes & titles than in previous eras, he still deserves credit for achieving world class success across 1 of the widest breadths of weight in history. Also, his run from Morales 2 thru Margarito ranks among the most impressive streaks ever IMO. I disagree, he was a very good contender @ mw, but he typically came up short vs. upper echelon opponents (i.e. Yarosz, Booker, Burley).
You make many salient points and I wouldn't argue to the death over it. I can't gloss over Foreman being "a good name" and Liston as so-so.
That’s okay, lots of people who know more about boxing than me would agree with you that Liston and 70s Foreman are great fighters… but to me Liston is one of the most replaceable HW champions in history, Foreman was in my opinion just not very good relative to other great fighters.
Nah man, Liston was an absolute beast. Exchange "replaceable" with "underrated" and that's where I'm at. His pre title run was superb and Clay lit him up. Anyway, all good.
