Can anyone provide me with info on Buster Douglas dad who was a fighter?

I know his dad was a light heavyweight who fought Marvin Johnson and Matthew Saad Muhammad. I believe he lost both. But anymore info on his career and how he fought, i.e. a slugger, pure boxer, boxer puncher etc

Billy “Dynamite” Douglas was somewhere in the gray area between journeyman and fringe contender. In short, he lost to all the better fighters he faced but beat some fellow not-quite types.

A national golden gloves middleweight champ, his best results against fighters with a degree of recognition were a draw against a declining Don Fullmer (apparently Billy won a split decision but the commission changed the result to a draw) and a decision over useful Willie Warren before he settled into opponent status.

Apart from that, he lost to a lot of good fighters — Matthew Saad Muhammad, Marvin Johnson, Victor Galindez, Willie Monroe, Jerry Martin, Bennie Briscoe being the most notable — across middleweight and light heavyweight. One gets the sense that if there had been a super middleweight division at the time, that might have been his best weight and his best chance at making a mark.

He could punch, he fit right in with the Philly guys. He was like a junkyard dog type of fighter. He stopped Willie The Worm..Saad was fortunate in his bout with Douglas.

The referee didnt give Douglas the same chance to recover that he had given Mathew. The referee felt like Billy being an older fighter he wouldnt take a chance. He had Saad though hurt bad.
If i remember correctly this guy named Bennie took out Douglas. He was kinda Bad.
One thing that stands out is he was the opposite of his son as far as mentality, his dad was a warrior. Buster was a warrior one night basically. You had to drag Bus into the gym and you had to drag Dynamite out of the gym.

 

I heard someone, I’m sure it was on here, say that he was watching the fight and that Douglas had Saad rocked and the ref could’ve easily have stepped in.

 

I always remember reading up on the Douglas - Pedro Soto bout. There is a terrific write up on boxrec on this fight if anyone would be inclined to post it (I simply can’t being out of town off the phone). Anyways, I always wanted to see this one after everything I read on it. The crowd fell in love with Douglas despite the fact he was the visitor. The write up I read back in the day stated that during the following bout, Douglas was leaving the arena up in the mezzanine in a suit and waved to the crowd. The crowd was so taken with the veteran’s performance that they stood and gave him a round of applause.

 

Unless boxrec has it wrong (possible) or they fought again and boxrec missed it, Dynamite Billy lost a decision to Willie the Worm but did knock the Worm down.

Dynamite Billy took the fight on the morning of when Tom Bethea pulled out and they delivered a rocking 10 rounds that saw Soto edge it on points despite being knocked down twice, the second time with 8 seconds left. He got to his feet but was out of it when the bell rang before the rumble could resume.

Saoul Mamby and Harold Weston fought to a draw that night in the Garden. And Vilomar Fernandez gave a boxing lesson to Ray Lampkin.

Matchmaker should have gotten a gold medal.

I know the Douglas-Saad fight was televised but I´ve never seen it. One day hopefully. No idea if the Soto fight was recorded. I read a comprehensive right up on the fight in Boxing News many years ago. Sounded like a great fight. Soto was considered a bright prospect, Douglas fight derailed him.

I thought so at one time, then I read that Mike lost his virginity in Tokyo so that invalidates the result. A fighter who loses a fight after having sex doesn’t count.
