Any thoughts on this Venezuelan puncher? A very underrated Super Flyweight champ who made for some entertaining fights. His fight with Celes Kobayashi where he won the WBA Super Flyweight title is especially a fantastic war. Lost to Martin Castillo twice and came up short against Cristian Mijares. You've got a thin guy being named "El Flaco Explosivo" and now you got a Trinidad built like venezuelan named El Explosivo? Dayum.
Good champion indeed. He had his flaws - mainly on the technical side - but his power, athlethicism and lanky frame made him a very dangerous operator. It looked like Martin Castillo exposed him when He took his title, timing his wide shots fairly easily. When the rematch got ordered and Top Rank put the fight on one of their PPV undercards, Jim and Larry were not happy about it, almost ridiculing the fight before it started - only to see Munoz drop Castillo in a first round and give them and the audience a great 12 round war. I thought He should've won that fight - but He soon won got title back anyway, taking his revange on Castillo more indirectly, beating the guy who took his title and undefeated record, Nashiro. To me, Munoz was the better fighter in his second run. He looked better conditioned, as if He trained harder - and was able to use his physical attributes against shorter opponent to box more, while still keeping them honest with his dangerous right hand. Nashiro and Kawashima were very good wins. He eventually fell just in his career definiing fight against Cristian Mijares, when the win could've led to some major fights against Arce, Montiel or Darchinyan. Interesting fact about his career is that He never lost a title fight in Japan - and He never won a title fight outside of it. It would make sense if He was Japanese, perhaps - but is an interesting curiosity with him being from Venezuela.
