Noooo. It was Di Stéfano. Schiaffino and Obdulio Varella were probably bigger too. Firpo was big in Argentina, of course, but I think his impact is being overrated here... Justo Suarez was a bigger boxing icon in Argentina than him.
Not Johnson - Jeffries? It was exciting because Rickard made the nascent sporting audience imagine it was going to be exciting. The most exciting thing was Firpo shoving Dempsey out of the ring, which was not boxing. Dempsey & Co. put on Great Events... not great boxing contests. That latter was not their aim.
I´m not saying I agree, but it was refered to as Fight of The Century by many in those days..I guess they wanted to forget Johnson days ..
Of all the fights filmed up to and including 1923, it wouldn't make my top 10. We must remember that in popular culture, The Big Event on a scale such as it was blossoming into in the early 20th c was unprecedented, especially in sport. You now had the power of film, radio and widely distributed print to accompany and amplify the event. You professional promotion men like Rickard to whip the public up into a salivating Pavlovian response whether the actual product was worth such a reaction. And it all boils down to the $$$ which powered it all. God Bless Capitalism. God Bless the Big Event. But never mistake either for boxing.
I agree, Firpo is only in there because of Dempsey of course... sp it has to do with the gigantic name that Dempsey was... Firpo´s career had no relevance in voting him into the Hall I´m sure; it became a fight well known even in popular culture... because of that famous painting of the fight, pictures, in many movies, Dempsey is mentioned in movies, series... there is a Simpsons episode where they make a mention of the fight...
