Joey Archer who beat prime Dick Tiger, Ruben Hurrican Carter, I feel he beat Emile Griffth for the title in first fight. Joey was a classic boxer, who actually dropped a vintage SRR in SRR last fight. Joey was a great fighter in an era of 8 divisions and a time when the whole world, especially NY knew every Champion in those 8 divisions. Rest in Peace Joey Archer - a gentlemen
RIP. Among all the contenders/non-champs whose names get tossed around in "should this fighter be in the hof?" discussions, he has 1 of the better cases IMO.
Unfortunate news.. I always liked Archer's skillset,he was able to move around, jab while using roughhousing tactics, change angles greatly and find a way to survive in the clinch greatly.
Sad news. Only looked him up about a week or so ago, was curious to see if he was still with us. R.I.P.
Fought a ton of long passed guys from the Golden Age and retire relatively young. Looks great on film. I hope his latter years were rewarding. RIP
After Joey retired from the sport he spent much of his post boxing years in the neighborhood of Yorkville in Manhattan. Most notable in sports circles as the birthplace of New York Yankees legend Lou Gehrig. Archer and his brother Jimmy opened two bars in the late 1960s - the Sports Corner and Archers Pub. I think both had closed by the start of the 80s. Rip
