Just saw Cotto vs. Margarito again & Cotto's chin was not the issue......

The busted nose CLEARLY affected Cotto's breathing and is partially responsible for how quickly he seemed to gas. Yet, it was the result of a Margarito punch. Margarito won the fight fair and square, but it's not a stretch to say the ending of the fight could have been different had the busted nose not occurred. People are making it seem like Marg had his way with Cotto from the opening bell, when that's not the case.

How do we know that, Antwuan? Are you sure it wasn't just the bodywork and the shots to the head? Are you being objective about this? Bleeding and broken noses are very common in this sport, now suddenly they are an overwhelming factor when a fighter gets clearly beaten up with specific combinations, and specific punches, at specific intervals? I know why you're pressing the issue, dude. And it's not because you're being objective. You're usually very laid back about every issue, but not this one. There's a reason for that.

Read my original post and notice the emphasis on "partially." Margarito's body shots and the pace he set forward were just as effective as the busted nose. Still the nose was a factor in the fight, regardless of whether or not you care to acknowledge it. Common sense says it's pretty damn hard to breathe when having blood flow down your vaseline filled nostrils.

And what would that be?

 

Anyone with brains would realise it wasn't a chin issue, if it was a chin issue this would have been over in the 4th or even 5th as Margarito was already landing vicious punches at that point. It was Cotto running out of gas and breaking down completely that finished him off, of course that all came from the affective pressure Margarito put on him.

 

No, I don't at all agree Cotto was artifically fatigued by the bleeding from his nose. Cotto was unquestionably slowed down by Margarito's bodywork, and ultimately the combinations Margarito landed upstairs that hurt Cotto on several occasions in the mid and late rounds. I'm extremely familiar with Cotto's entire career and know him exceptionally well as a fighter. Cotto loads up on his shots burning excess energy, he doesn't take punches generally well, and he doesn't have the best stamina to begin with. There is no possible way Cotto would have lasted 11+ rounds with Margarito if he had a debilitating problem with his breathing/nose to go along with everything else that was happening. Margarito's punches and pressure combined with such a condition would have made that highly unlikely, and virtually impossible. Cotto has gassed out in fights far less taxing than that.

 

Cotto doesn't have the best chin, but he did take some good shots and fought back. Shots I didn't expect him to take from Margo. Unfortunatly those shots accumulated and landed in some vital spots.
