Not the most impressive showing. Inoue is definitely a top fighter, but he's been lucky to rule over a weak era of 118 to 122 pounders. I think a prime Erik Morales thoroughly dominates him at 122. El Terrible might even stop him. Way too much power, chin, length and technique for Inoue. I have real questions about the caliber of opponents he's faced over the years.
You can only beat who you have in front of you. But you can't put Inoue on the level of guys like Barrera or Morales, I'd favour them over Inoue for sure. Same with JMM, his counter punching against Inoue would be really hard for Inoue to deal with. He'd be competitive because his combination of speed and power is very rare but he simply doesn't have the resume to suggest he should be favoured over these great fighters, at least for now. Inoue is stepping things up with Akhmadaliev, Ball and Nakatani, that's a good run of fights and if he comes out winning all 3 it does add to his resume and brings him closer to the likes of Morales and co. It's a shame Inoue doesn't have the competition to really test him and bring the best out of him. Pac needed guys like Barrera and especially Morales to get to that next level. The loss to Morales was key in the evolution of Pac into the ATG he became and Inoue may end up never having a Morales or a JMM to force him to evolve and improve.
He is an entertainer first and foremost, one of whom knockouts are expected. If he was comfortable boxing and deconstructing his opposition carefully from the opening bell, we wouldn't have seen knockdowns again neither Cardenas, nor Nery.
Your post says more about the incredibly high standards we hold Inoue up to. Only Naoya could get dropped, win just about everyone other round, execute a destructive gameplan, and still cause so many to frown. It's basically a compliment.
Morales, Marquez and Barrera would all get destroyed by Inoue p4p. They are all massive in reality however. Inoue is still a better fighter, and I wouldn’t worry about them getting a KO shot like I was worried about Cardenas who hits like a truck albeit has low workrate, a puncher’s chance is what I gave him due to his speed and power (and boxing ability), and he almost got it. Inoue’s elusiveness afterwards however has made him even more impressive in my eyes.
Every fighters has either off nights or they fight someone that turns out to be much better than everyone expected. It happens all time and Inoue is no exception from that. Not the best that Inoue has looked considering he was expected to completely blow out Cardenas but it certainly answered questions about what Inoue is capable of doing after having some rocky moments. If anything it's still a good showing of Inoue's ability to quickly adapt, not make the same mistake twice, and still finish strong. We'll have to wait to see how his career ends before we make any comparisons with Pac, Morales, Barrera, JMM.
Of course, although when he has to be comfortable boxing and deconstructing his opponents, we get performances like he delivered against Fulton. So it's not like that approach is out of the cards for him and I have a feeling he'll be pulling them out of his bag with a lot more frequency when he makes the move to 126. You can already see in his responses, that he's a bit wary about the move to start with.
Yeah he's a total bum! It's not like he's being dropped or stopped by all time greats like Rustico Torrecampo, Boonsai Sangsurat and Serikzhan Yeshmagambetov, RIGHT?
Based on what I saw against Cardenas, I'm starting to think I might favor Junto over Inoue. Akh becomes an even more interesting matchup now because MJ can throw counter lefts like that in his sleep and he carries good power. LIke, I know Cardenas was a legit and pretty skilled contender and that he was up for the fight. But I see a little bit of decline from even a couple of years ago, and that makes the above matches pretty dangerous for Inoue. Still a great watch though. And cleaning out a division that's perfectly solid at worse is a fine accomplishment.
I knew after watching this fight there'd be emotionally childish reactions to Inoue getting knocked down about how he's ,,weak chinned, not really that good, hasn't fought anyone. It's predictable, Cardenas impressed me, he came to fight and let it all hang out against a guy who is constantly being matched up in competitive fantasy fights with ATG's from 118 to 130 pounds and not considered outmatched. Inoue got caught with a beautifully timed left hook that caught him cleanly. He responded by getting up and breaking Cardenas down and gave him a beating. In my opinion he is the best fighter in the world today
They probably would have still happened since Nery can fight and Cardenas is very explosive. Inoue got caught, no big deal.
