Curious as to were people have him here I have seen lots of mixed views. Sorry if this had been done before it probably has but I haven't seen it since I have been on so it must have been at least a few months.
Def top ten I have him 6th personally but I can see maybe a bit higher depending on what you value he had an insanely high peak but afterwards he really fell off so depends on what you value.
Top 10 for me too. Ali and Louis are clearly the first two. Holmes, Marciano and Foreman are also ahead of him. Since I don't know much about the heavyweight of the first half of the 20th century, I wouldn't want to commit myself about ranking them. But I can see an argument for some based on historical significance (Johnson notably). Tyson ranking is comparable to Lewis and Holyfield (he is slightly higher IMO).
On a prime for prime and head to head sense - top 3. He could be the best ever on a prime for prime and head to head sense. Legacy wise top 10. His reign was short but he was truly the undisputed champion, and he was by far the P4P number 1. He ruled boxing in his prime.
Fringe Top10. Tyson is one case of a boxer's legacy being somewhat downgraded as time goes by. I remember when I started posting here 10+ years ago, Tyson was considered like the HW GOAT by many. Gladly time has fixed most overhyped perspectives and nowadays there is a more balanced and critical view of Tyson.
I rate Tyson around 7 all time, can't see him outside the top ten, no way. But he's not top 5, though he should have been.
I would say lower top 10. Depending on what you are looking for, I can see arguments for top 12 or as high as 5.
Had he never returned from post prison he would be a lock top 5 heavy in history. His rise and dominance was the stuff of legend. Pre/prison he was 41-1. He is still the most exciting boxer I’ve seen all weight classes. It’s a shame Tyson tarnished his legacy so badly with a farcical second career and myriad of problems outside the ring. As it is I think you can squeeze him into the top 10 or place him no lower than 15.
