Jack Sharkey vs. Povetkin

If we take these two guys in exactly the same form that they were in their own eras without changing the universe to level out the playing field, then I have to go with Povetkin.

 

Still Povetkin.

 

We have two men here who are both perfectly capable of loosing to the other.

However I am going to go with Sharkey.

Hidden among his inconsistency, he has a much better body of work, and even a much more impressive run of form.

Perhaps it is time for me to do another deep dive on the subtleties of Sharkey's resume.

There are some threads that I have to reproduce every few years.

A Sharkey deep dive might be overdue.

 

Povetkin easily. Sharkey way too small and his chin was not the best I don't see how he keeps Povetkin at bay when Povetkin is very good at closing the distance against way bigger taller opponents. Compared to that Sharkey would be easy work

 

Did Ray Arcel really this about Sharkey ?

Povetkin again? You literally have at least 150 years of boxing history and you still are focused on the Bolshevik cheat. Now his opponent is Sharky? Put down the edibles, but I will play along. I got Sharky

 

Povetkin and by KO maybe in 6-7 rounds.

 

Yeah, a Sharkey decision seems most likely here imo.

 

I don't see how Sharkey is going to do this.

His strengths were a decent jab and that he was a big strong guy ... for his time.

Against Povetkin he's giving up 25 to 35 lbs depending on versions.

Just the same as other jabbers were unable to keep Povetkin at a distance, I don't think he would be able to either.

When we look at Sharkey / Schmeling, an interesting observation arises.

The kind of dipping rush that Povetkin does to get into range is the same thing that Schmeling does against Sharkey and it is effective at avoiding the jab and closing the distance fast. Sharkey does not seem to be at all on the same level as Povetkin as an inside fighter, even if we disregard the weight disadvantage. The way Sharkey often keeps his hands low and has little head movement does not bode well against Sasha's nuclear hooks and overhands.

Povetkin by KO seems the most likely to me.
