Jack Sharkey vs. Povetkin

Yeah, a Sharkey decision seems most likely here imo.

 

I don't see how Sharkey is going to do this.

His strengths were a decent jab and that he was a big strong guy ... for his time.

Against Povetkin he's giving up 25 to 35 lbs depending on versions.

Just the same as other jabbers were unable to keep Povetkin at a distance, I don't think he would be able to either.

When we look at Sharkey / Schmeling, an interesting observation arises.

The kind of dipping rush that Povetkin does to get into range is the same thing that Schmeling does against Sharkey and it is effective at avoiding the jab and closing the distance fast. Sharkey does not seem to be at all on the same level as Povetkin as an inside fighter, even if we disregard the weight disadvantage. The way Sharkey often keeps his hands low and has little head movement does not bode well against Sasha's nuclear hooks and overhands.

Povetkin by KO seems the most likely to me.

 

Sharkey was tiny by the standards of Povetkin's era and he had no equalizer. And his skills, both offensive and certainly defensive, were not up to Sasha's. This would be target practice in the truest send of the term. I see a devastating KO in under 7.

 

Not saying that he beats Povetkin, but Sharkey does look a deal better than in the vid against Schmeling in those videos.

He damn near falls down when throwing a right hand. Sasha would groove an uppercut that would end matters hastily the second time Sharkey attempted such a maneuver.

 

I don't think you know how good Sharkey was.. he wasn't just a jab.. his problem was he just wasn't consistent enough.. but he's better than Povetkin:

H2H no but I think you can make a case for Sharkey if they were the same size or in terms of more skill for my 0.2$ Povetkin mulches him in real life though IMO.

 

An extra 30lbs would help SHarkey a great deal here.
