Two capable super-middleweights, one known for their devastating power, the other known for being beaten by Carl Froch in front of the entire population of Britain at Wembley. But both also had the misfortune of being cursed with a less than stellar engine and fell apart the later a fight went. But who had the worse gas tank?

I recall Groves often finishing fights relatively strong.

Is Plant known for his devastating power?

Plant's gas tank is horrible for a guy who doesn't throw with power. It's almost like his mental gas tank is bad, too. The sharpness he has in rounds 1-5 is actually very good, he just can't sustain it physically or mentally once he starts taking shots.

His chin is better than given credit for, it's his reaction to taking shots that's bad. Stark contrast to someone like Groves who can remain more switched on (unless he gets KO'd in front of 80k)

Agreed but, I'd give the edge to groves, that low slung jab followed by the back hand could be pretty devastating.

I'm seeing it the same way, Plant maybe having his moments first half, but got St George smashing his way through in the end

Froch getting the better of Groves in the later rounds isn't because Groves had a poor gas tank, it is more due to Froch's superhuman conditioning. Against Eubank for example Groves' gas tank was fine, and he even managed to hold out with one of his arms hanging off. I dread to think what the likes of Froch would do to Plant; I don't see Plant having any of the success Groves did, rather Froch would simply walk through him.

Groves was an explosive type and had a good engine for that type, went the distance a number of times and seemed okay.
Froch was a bad matchup for him because Groves couldn't get him out of there and Froch wasn't just tough he was also good and had good power.

So in the first Groves probably threw too much trying to stop Froch, threw more than usual and did start to tire though he was also stopped because of Howard Foster which even good conditioning couldn't overcome that night. It would have been hard for Groves to hold on and box for the win from there but who knows he was fast and a good boxer.

In the second he made a mistake trying to hook between Froch's one-two and Froch landed a very accurate punch. Groves didn't seem to be chugging there really. He could definitely be decent over 12 fighting like he did that night where he was more restrained than the first. You could argue fatigue led to the mistake but it's hard to prove that.

Plant has no excuses because he isn't an explosive KO guy like Groves. He's more of a pure boxer.

I've had similar thoughts about Plant, he seems to have plenty of tools to make him a good fighter but as you said he can't seem to sustain it, especially when punches start flying. Gil Clancy once said of Roberto Duran on how he was able to fight at an older age and he stated,"The reason Roberto can do what he does in the ring is he's so relaxed and comfortable in there". When I see Plant in a fight he seems to be the opposite ,so tense that he mentally burns himself out. My two cents

Same opinion here, Plant is just tense all the time. Whats crazy is that this can be easily fixed, but no one in his team can either see the flaw, or Plant himself is too stubborn.

I think Groves is a better fighter. He’d ice Plant.

Yea I had a similar thought, I just don't think Plant likes pressure and starts to get stressed in there, which in turn tires him out. Like Duran, I thought James Toney was the same way, just completely relaxed. He could probably take a nap in there countering off the ropes.
