Fair enough, here's another fight with Toney showing off his skills against a guy that people would be calling GGG a can-crusher for even fighting This content is protected Let's see Golovkin on his "worst night". Contrast that with GGG who came in sick and jetlagged for this one This content is protected
One thing is for sure, this figjt is gong the distance. On one hand, you have one of the greatest defensive fighter's of all time who also has a cast iron chin going against a guy that I don't believe was ever dropped in his 350 amateur and 45 fight pro career. I think at his absolute best, Toney wins a decision with his counterpunching ability but then again, GGG had a phenomenal jab and may just peck away at Toney and not give him any opportunity to counter.
Great fight, I think Toney's defense, jaw and counterpunching ability could have gotten the better of GGG's constant pressure and power, but it should have been the best Toney in the ring that night, like the one we saw against Barkley and Jirov.
at his best, Toney beats him. you are cherry picking fights where Toney was not at his best. because you have an agenda.
Damn there seem to be a LOT of fights where Toney was "not at his best", don't there? There are lots of guys that he laboured to a narrow SD or drew with in his stint at 160.
Toney on points. Competitive, but clear. Toney generally fought to the level of his competition (I.e Tiberi, Thadzi). Against GGG, he won't (& can't afford to). GGG will once again be tentative & gun shy (like he was against Canelo) because he's fighting an elite level counterpuncher, with fast hands, a good punch, & defence. GGG won't look destructive like when he fought C & B level opponents.
As predictable as the sun coming up in the morning. James was fighting every few months at that point. He’d had more fights than GGG had fought in his entire career, by the time he’d hit his late 20’s. Nobody knows how GGG would have fared under those conditions. How about we show GGG’s clips of fighting elite level southpaws like Nunn? How about we show clips of him beating a guy as great as McCallum? James would have been favoured over GGG. He was just a better fighter.
All jokes aside, I love both fighters, but Golovkin just has a pretty bad style for Toney at that point in his career. Toney's bread and butter is countering the right hand, but Golovkin would rarely throw his as a single shot and was excellent at changing the speed and power of his punches, as well as the height he threw them at, both at his opponents and in terms of his own head and body positioning. GGG also loved to feint. Like, a lot. Loads of EE fighters get taught to use it as a cornerstone of their style and Golovkin is one of the few pressure fighters I've seen who can effectively feint on the front-foot without compromising his defensive integrity. This means that he can force Toney to spend a lot of energy trying to predict what he's going to throw so he can counter and, at the same time, catch the judges' eyes as the aggressor and force Toney to move more than he likes. Younger Toney was a bit tighter and less relaxed than he would later become and was notably less comfortable on the inside (not that he still wasn't very good there, or that Gennadiy wasn't either for that matter), but it wasn't a strong point of his style like it later became. Toney also had a very hard time making 160 and that takes a toll on a fighter when they're in there against someone who will make them think and work as much as prime Golovkin did, which would also play a part. Toney would have his fair share of success obviously, he was of course a sublime technician in his own right and those thudding uppercuts would catch GGG a few times coming in I imagine in the early going. But I do think GGG's feints, jab, and ring IQ would make the difference against a pretty inexperienced and inconsistent Toney and would punish some of the gaps Toney still had while at 160. I think it would look something like a cross between both McCallum and Canelo fights, and would be a very close affair.
Fun fact: Sanderline Williams fought more elite fighters in one year (1990) than GGG in his entire career
If Mc Calllum could not do it, then GGG sure as hell can’t.Mc Callum had clearly better boxing skills than GGG
