Billy Nelson out here like the McDonald’s of trainers — dependable, everywhere, but don’t be surprised when your heavyweight shows up supersized. At this point, he's training Bakole for diabetes, not a title shot.
Eric Esch wishing Nelson was around in his day https://eu.lansingstatejournal.com/...ade-razors-and-growing-up-st-johns/466275001/
Poor. He's only had real success with Ricky Burns. Apart from that his fighters all fail in their biggest fights or don't get to any decent level, and he makes petty excuses when they lose. He's had plenty of P4P Sparring Kings though, sparring champions galore. Never known a trainer talk about sparring so much
On a serious note, Nelson done a great job with Ricky Burns and got Bakole within 2-3 fights from a World Title Fight. The boxer, being a professional athlete has to take responsibility for his dedication, nutrition and lifestyle.
I agree; you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink (or more aptly, you can lead Bakole to the buffet table but you can't stop him gorging himself).
Not a very good proverb since no trainer would be leading Bakole to a buffet table in the first place.
Crap. As you'll see again with the Paddy Donovan vs Lewis Crocker rematch at Windsor Park on September 13th.
There was a time when a professional boxing trainer would take responsibility if their fighter wasn't in shape. It was considered their job to get a fighter in shape. Or they would end their relationship with a fighter who they couldn't control or refused to follow orders or dedicate themselves. I think that started changing in some camps when "S & C" trainers and nutritionists were brought in to help. Eventually we get a bunch of "boxing trainers" who seem to pride themselves on having nothing to do with fitness and diet.
good point but doesnt exactly set a good example himself does he? lost weight and put a bit back on but he lost the weight during a time where a lot of people were losing weight due to the ozempic treatment so i wonder if he did it through that
Personally I wouldn't want to be trained by someone who is out of shape, unless they were a genuine guru mastermind character. It's probably no coincidence that Bakole and Nelson both carry a few spare tyres around their middles. Probably discuss fight plans over a 24 box of Krispy Kremes.
