No champs yet but is there anyone in this list of guys we often hear said “could be champions in any other era” etc that would beat Vitali? who was competing in quote “the worst HW era” by most people? - just wondering - this isn’t a complete list but to prevent a spiral thread… Foreman, Frazier and Ali were “the man” at one time or another in the 70s so they’re off so when Norton is on here please note he was given A belt, it’s also my thread. Patterson is also not here because he was never champ in the 70s. Holmes can be on here but it’s grey for me more of a champion of the 80s then a guy you’d associate with “Godlen era contender” same as Floyd Patterson I wouldn’t really put him here but “eh” go for it.

    Uncle Jimmy Young
    Ken Norton
    Jerry Quarry
    Buster Mathis
    Ron Lyle
    Chuck Wepner
    Enry Cooper
    Earnie Shavers
    Jimmy Ellis
    Oscar Bonavena
    Joe Bugner
    Kallie Knoetzee
    Mac Foster
    Duane Bobick
    Ernie Terrell

@themaster458 you like the Euro fighters who wouldn’t be able to carry Buster Mathis Snr’s jock strap what do you think?

He beats them all by knockout I don't think any fighter you mentioned could beat Vitali at his best barring an injury which he was always suseptible to

Do we often hear that? I personally can't recall ever hearing that but I haven't really been active here in awhile and I also zone out during heavyweight threads. Anyways the way to properly challenge this claim is to pick one of the guys mentioned, look at all the "eras" (How you define those eras will depend on the person) and see if there's an era where the selected boxer would not be able to beat any of the champions of that era.

Anyways I'm not a h2h expert if such a thing exists but I would favor him to win all of those matches. However as I mentioned earlier in the "Can Liston do Louis' title run?" thread, this means basically nothing because the version of Vitali we're using for this thread that never ages and never gets injured did not exist.

Used to be a very favourable term for Boomers to say without ever going into detail about who in the 70s? lol Jimmy Young debatably beat Ali and Norton + actually beating Foreman… Lyle almost beat Foreman and before we expected that as a fact and it didn’t count I assume he was one of the guys who gave rise to the stupid Ahh saying for making Ali struggle.

I'm part of gen Z so I personally haven't heard that phrase. I don't think it's accurate at all but mostly because I can't think of an era where it would be true. I could be blanking out on an obvious answer but imagine an era where all of the top 12 or so could have been champions in ANY other era, not just most eras. That just seems very unlikely no matter the era. It's also a pointless phrase because you don't need it to explain why Lyle made Ali struggle. I imagine most people can tell that mid to late 70s Ali isn't peak and/or prime Ali. If someone were to reject that conclusion I'd need a pretty good argument from them explaining why.

I’m on my early 20s, I heard it a bunch lurking all over the place a long while ago, you’d always hear “this guy would’ve been a champ in any other era” etc etc a lot.

for such picks to be viable you can only line up the Really Tall ones to compete with the S-HW's.

all regular size guys would be today's Cruiserweights and the more leaner & lighter among them, would be today's S-MW's & L-HW's.

comparing Era's with 17 Weight Divisions and Taller Bigger guys fighting & competing DOWN in Weight, is NOT the Same Weight Division in a Past Era.

i.e RJJ and BHop are NOT Fighting Tony Zale and Co... NO!

they are Fighting Billy Conn and Co and finishing at HW against Louis and Co.

so many people just talk, post and roll on as if these recent Decade Taller Bigger fighters are the same Stature to yesteryear's Shorter Lighter Men - NO they are NOT!!!

He could have problems with Jimmy Young like he did with Byrd.

So far a belt holder from the worst HW era is running through the guys of the best HW era… woah? - seems unanimous so far, might add Frazier into the mix next.

He got injured because Byrd made him swing at air. Young could do the same thing.
