When did the subject of this thread .The Quality Of Listons Opponents, change to The Quality Of Listons Opponents Versus Usyk's?
Yeah, he did well. There were a lot of dandy technicians about and he blew them up, across the board. I love watching him place fighters under control, he did that just about as well as any heavyweight, he showed such beautiful adaptations in the Machen fight, I love that fight. He's mainly beaten up cruiserweights with a size advantage, but it's not like the size advantage was insane, he didn't have Tyson Fury's size advantage over the opposition I don't think.
Machen had recently been KOd in ONE round by Johansson.. he had failed to beat Zora Folley twice & his main claim to fame then was his two wins over LHW Joey Maxim who was a shot 35 yr old who had gone 7-7 in his previous 14 fights.. losing to men like Moore & Charles multiple times.. hed also lost twice the previous year.. beating a 196lb Machen isn't anything standout. A well past his best 181lb Harold Johnson did it.. Listons wins aren't anything special & Fury isn't evangelised like Liston is. Many people rank Liston top 10/15.. Fury isn't even top 20.
I wonder how many "posters" have bumped a thread that has been dead and buried for over a decade just to have another shot at stirring the pot and getting some attention. Elite effort.
I am simply saying that comparing Liston's wins to THE CURRENT CHAMPION'S exposes some hypocrisy. It isn't hard to understand.
What always struck me about the Machen fight was how writers back then always seemed to denigrate Eddie's performance. Mostly they said he ran. He didn't run. He did move just enough to prevent Liston from getting set. He fought a brave fight with only one hand and engaged in more than a little rough stuff with the legendarily strong and powerful Sonny.
Recently? Machen had lost to Johansson 2 years earlier, after which he had11 fight s before taking on Liston,10 of which he won, among those he beat in that 10 were Hunter no 6 Miteff no10 Young Jack Johnson Pat McMurtry Willie Besmanoff The single loss in those 11 fights was to Folley ,the number 1 contender. After losing to Liston Machen beat14 of 16 opponents losing only to Harold Johnson and Floyd Patterson. Among the 14 he beat were. DeJohn x2 Bethea Rischer McMurray Jones Whitehurst London And drew with Williams And he still had enough in his last couple of fight to beat rising prospects Joey Orbillo and Jerry Quarry . In another blatant effort to denigrate Liston you've tried to make it seem as though Machen was a spent force when he faced Liston You tried to do the same thing with Valdes when you posted this **** below. ageing Nino Valdes was shot.. hadn't had a good win in about 7 years & had lost 2 of his last 3 fights to low quality HWs. Could never get it together in his prime let alone at 35. In reply to which I posted; A year prior to being stopped by Liston ,Valdes had beaten McMurtry tko. McMurtry was number 5. DeJohn twice bt dec.DeJohn was number 7. Bethea by dec.Bethea was no 8. Three top ten wins in the previous year.lol Two dismal failures at dumping on Liston on your part. You make yourself a laughing stock with your ridiculously over the top bias against Liston. Still ,thanks for the comedy!
Just a point of fact. Valdes was not rated when he stopped into the ring with Liston. That #2 is the 1958 yearly ranking, but Valdes had lost badly by KO to Powell and lopsided decision to Alonzo Johnson. I am certain he wasn't rated because Nat Fleischer wrote previews of televised fights for the TV Guide, and always gave ratings. And emphasized the point the Valdes was no longer rated. By the way, I saw the fight on TV. Valdes held his own for the first two rounds, but was dropped by a right in the third. He was sitting and didn't get up in time. He was rising but still had both gloves touching the canvas at ten. If my memory is a bit off, cut me some slack. It has been 66 years.
Johnson had lost 1 of his last18 fights, and in that fight he was drugged. He would go on to win the Lhvy title and beat among others: Cotton Hank Scholz Jones And lose a debatable decision to Pastrano. Do you think we don't check these stats?
