this is totally irrelevant. the g-man drained a **** load of weight to get down there and as far as i'm aware always drastically outweighed his opponent on fight night, benn included.

Because Americans totally dominated the fight game for most of the 20th century. That was because Europe was recovering and rebuilding after two major world wars and a lot of people didn't have leisure for sports. Also boxing was not a big part of the sports culture in Europe, being dwarfed by football (soccer). So Americans totally dominated but they were pretty much the majority of those competing. this led to the view that Americans are just superior to everyone else and only recently are the stereotypes starting to change. Lacy was destroying American competition therefore a lot of the boxing media figured he was leagues above mere foreign competition. Like it or not its gonna take a while before the stereotype of the superior American athlete is replaced with a more balanced view.

No its not totally irrelevant McClellan fought pretty much his whole career at middle weight. It's not totally irrelevant at all.

I didn't say it did, but surly every fighter moving up in weight is going to experience some difference. He may have even been better at the weight who knows... I just made the point that it was his first real outing at the weight; which is a fact.

This thread topis kind of tasteless because of the mentioning of the McClellan-Benn fight being mentioned. Bringing up the Calzhaghe-Hopkins fight is laughable when Joe looked like an amatuer in the early rounds and got KD. I always thought Flint was a good poster that perception has changed for me now.

Bad losers? I refer you to Minter V Hagler.

Watch that fight, then you'll see who the REAL bad losers are. I didn't see riots in the USA when our guys went over there and won.

This whole thread makes me feel ashamed, in many ways :nono

    people are missing the point

this is not to gloat about the aftermath of the Benn - McCllelnan fight

what happened to Gerald McCllelnan was tragic

but before the fight all the hype was Gerald doing all the damage

and disgracefully - he said he was going to KILL Benn

and he said he came within a inch of knocking out Nigel Benns father Dennis.

Gerald McCllenan represented the arrogance and superioty complex alot of the Yanks had

and Lacy is not a ridicilous comparsion because it was the similiar story when he came over to Britiain he was expected to blow away one of Britians finest fighters - based on what???? - sheer hype - he was taken to school and hammered - Lacy was CRAP compared to Calzaghe

I'm sorry you feel this way.

But I cant ignore this fight and pretend it never happened.

To me Benn-McCllenan was the most memorable fight on British shores in the last 15 years

what do you expect me to do?

never mention the fight because it had a tragic outcome????? - thats ridicoulous

Michael Watson was put in a wheel Chair by Chris Eubank - but Watson is now friends with Eubank and built himself back up to compete in the London Marathon - he didnt pretend like it never happened.

But I am not gloating about what happened to Gearld McCllenan

Nigel Benn himself is very remorseful of what happened to Gerald

And a fund raiser in Britain was put on to help raise funds for Gerald McCllenan.

But to ignore the hype before the fight would just be lying to myself

I remeber Gerald saying he was going to seriously damage Benn

a disgusting thing to say - he wanted to permantely damage Benn

I'm sure Benn in contrast never intended to seriously damage McCllenan like he did.

I'm focusing on all the hype before the fight

and the Hopkins fight - was not meant to be part of this topic - I dont know why I mentioned that to be honest

but the Lacy coming over to Britain was a simliar story and all the hype he brought

    the next Mike Tyson

    monster

    Calzaghe is gonna get killed

    etc
    etc

I agree British fans brought shame on themsleves

Same way many English Fans bring shame on themsleves in Football Hooliganism

    bunch of scumbags

thats more though just a bunch of hooligans looking for trouble

I'm not talking about violence and disruption at events by people who are only out to cause trouble

I'm talking about the attiutdtes and mentality of people in the sport

    Good post:good

This is exactly what I was getting at

    Hype over substance

the arrogance of Americans - think that nothing exists outside their own country

because Joe Calzaghe had never fought in America he was regarded as nothing

so America sent their new Sensation over in Lacy and they found out the hard way - fighters - dont have to make it in America to be good.

    Lacy was destroyed.
