Ricardo Mayorga 2003 Julio Cesar Chavez 1995 Danny Garcia 2016 How do you see The Cobra faring in these 3 individual match ups.
Given that Chavez was already on the slide if not completely past it in 96 i might just completely write him off of the equation, he didn't really perform that good as a welterweight even in his prime tbh Can't speak on Danny Garcia as i haven't watched any footage of him except that disastrous showing against Lara, however seeing he lost to the likes of Keith a rong rong time ago Thurman, i don't see how Curry cannot finish the job properly And finally, in my opinion, anyone who can drive both Forrest and Spinks to the limit (practically beating both of them) can, and will absolutely have a chance to beat or atleast give Donald Curry a proper bout. Just my 2 cents TLR Curry beats all of them and probably has his hardest fight with Mayorga, yes, of all people.
He beats all of them, without that much trouble. Chavez was a better fighter, but not at WW, and not in 1995 either. Mayorga and Garcia are just plain inferior fighters
I'd love to see a Chavez vs Curry that'd be lively, may need it's own thread @greynotsoold ol buddy would you be interested in debating me for once if I kick it off? I think Curry has JCC's number.
Chavez was shot. Garcia would be a good scrap but Curry gets it. I actually think the Mayorga that took Forrest's had a good chance of pulling the trick. He would be a very live underdog in my book.
Chavez was not a welterweight. I don't see him beating Curry. Assuming we are talking about Donald and not Bruce?
We are talking about the guy who beat Starling not the one who dribbled Benitez like a basketball yeah - I was hoping you did, how about 140lbs Benitez vs 140lbs JCC?
Curry is the only boxer I know of who lost twice in upsets of the year, so favoring him only means so much. Edit: Other than Tyson.
Curry would stop all of them and Mayorga would make him uncomfortable for a couple of rounds but Curry would end up laying him out. Curry could punch pretty good and in his prime had a very good defense.
Mayorga is an interesting one. During his fights with Six head Lewis and Vernan Forrest it seemed he had a cast iron chin and no respect for the punches coming his way . So I was interested to see the fight with Tito Trinidad. Mayorga offered his chin to Trinidad to land free shots...Trinidad was more than happy to accomodate him and crashed home 6 consecutive left hooks as the crazed Mayorga begged him to hit him more. The round ended...and when Mayorga came out he quickly hit the deck from a comparatively lesser shot Thereafter he was never quite the same fighter Mayorga. Although the easy rationale is he simply started fighting superior foes and took losses. I've putted the peak crazy Mayorga of 2003 who hadnt yet tasted the beating Trinidad gave him. There was something in the early swagger and wild brawling of Mayorga that reminded me of the Lloyd Honeyghan of the Hatcher,Bumpus and Vaca fights ...although Honeyghan hit harder and unlike Ricardo was also a fast fancy dan slick boxer when he chose to be. The prime Curry surgically takes Mayorga apart before putting him conclusively out for 10. Even the diminished Curry of the Rosi fight knew how to handle a mauling brawling Gianfranci Rosi and he still had enough to beat Mayorga. Chavez of 1995 is a long reigning ageing veteran 140lbs champion stepping up to 147 like he did against Pernell. I see Curry boxing sharply in a fight even for 5 before Curry stretches ahead and leaves Julio's face a shocking mess around 9. Garcia gets outpointed over 12.
Going on a off thread tangent here....Currys reign was picturesque in the quality and variety of fighter he beat. A master boxer like Starling twice...a tall talented Mcrory, a tough power puncher Colin Jones...a fast moving runner with a numerically incredible record in La Roca...eventually he got beat on a night where he seemed a listless burnt out zombie. Some said it was Honeyghans style was s kryptonite Curry hadnt seen before. As multi talented as Lloyd was..and he did outbox Curry as much as outfight him..people zeroed in on how the rough stuff the headbutts from Lloyd got to Curry ..subsequent foes like Carlos Santos blatantly tried to rough up Curry with mauling and flagrant fool bloodied headbutts after headbutts....its highly conceivable a rough Mayorga would beat the weight drained Curry of september 1986 but this matchup is the prime Curry. As an aside I truly think the headbutts in 3 consecutive fights is what did for Curry in the ring cumalatively rather than just the Honeyghan fight. He started leading with his face and the opponents started headbutting him a fight strategy.
