So I was watching Cooney's comeback fights and he looked quite good stopping George Chaplin who had gave a prime Greg Page 2 very close fights.

Do you think Cooney in 1984 does better against Spinks ?

Spinks outclasses Cooney prime for prime also.

Winnable but very dangerous fight for Spinks. I wouldn't bet a penny on this fight.

Cooney was always dangerous with that left hook. He was certainly more focused in 84 but from I recall, he had a bit of a drinking problem that was fairly well know.

Spinks hand speed was a real issue for him in the fight. I remember watching that fight with my dad and being blown away by Spinks aggression when he had him hurt. No one saw that KO coming and just about everyone thought Spinks would either win a boring decision or get knocked out. Looking back on it now, it's clear that Cooney was no longer a serious contender even though he still had legit power with the left hook.

I think he Gerry has a chance. He was still 28 years old and showed up in good form to blast those guys away. Granted neither were contenders but not tomato cans either.

My thoughts exactly. One false move and Spinks could be out
