Here is my list of the ten top heavyweights of the 1930's. Posted to see if anyone wants to comment: 1---Joe Louis 2---Max Schmeling 3---Max Baer 4---Primo Carnera 5---Tommy Loughran 6---Steve Hamas 7---Ernie Schaaf 8---Jack Sharkey 9---Bob Pastor 10--Lou Nova Honorable mentions--Tommy Farr and Arturo Godoy. Anyone agree or disagree with anyone? Any additions?
Too many losses. Lots of others beat Baer. And the Farr victory was questionable. Where would you place him?
I have Braddock and Farr in my top 5. Would also have John Henry Lewis in the top 5. For last spot would plug in Nathan Mann or Uzcudchin. I'd take out 6,7,9,10.
fair. I guess i might sneak him at 10. Granted, he had plenty of losses. And yes, Baer lost a bunch of times. But when Braddock beat Baer, Max was on a lengthy winning streak. But i can also see a case for him being just outside the top 10.
Could you type up and post you list. Sounds interesting? On Uzcudun--should he be in the 1930's or the 1920's?
Hes one of them guys whose career is split in 2 but hes got the better half in the 30s. This applies to most of the guys hes competing with though like Mann, Pastor and Nova except they are late 30s early 40s. Louis Braddock Farr John Henry Lewis Max Baer Schmeling Loughran Jack Sharkey Carnera Uzcudcin
How does Schmeling fall way down to six. Behind Louis?--of course. Behind Baer? Understandable. But behind Braddock? Farr/ and the light-heavyweight Lewis? Could you explain.
Its all pretty close but Schmeling could easily have lost both the Sharkey fights and I think he got Louis at the right time. H2Hs the most important part of these rankings and H2H I would not pick Schemling to beat the fighters I ranked ahead of him. Farr went the distance with Louis, almost beat Braddock and has wins over Loughran and Baer lots of good European and British wins too. John Henry Lewis had an extensive HW career. He wasn't just a LHW. Braddock IMO was the best HW between Tunney and Louis who was mismanaged into fighting far below his natural weight. Louis said he hits the hardest of all his opponents. Another factor is Lewis and Farr packing in a whole HOF career before their 25th birthday like Louis.
If the list is H2H Schmeling makes a mess out of both Farr and Braddock, possibly the only 1930s fighter capable of stopping them aside from Louis. His wins over Louis, Hamas, Stribling, Walker, Neusel and the way he thrashed Sharkey around in the second fight should cement him in the number 2 spot behind Louis. He got Louis the time where he was going through the top ten like a buzzsaw. A win over the greatest when he was near his physical prime should net the guy a spot over Jim Braddock, Lewis and Tommy Farr.
Solid list, I was thinking about spots for Farr and Braddock but its hard to see who should be taken out for them at a glance. I'd shift Pastor up a few spots but based on accomplishments within the 1930s alone, it makes sense to have him at 9. In that case Nova should be higher for wins over Farr, Baer, Ramage and drawing with Pastor.
1. Joe Louis 2. Max Baer 3. Max Schmeling 4. Primo Carnera 5. Jack Sharkey 6. James J. Braddock 7. Tommy Loughran 8. Steve Hamas 9. Bob Pastor 10. Lou Nova
the John Henry Lewis fight was very questionable as well .. smart to rate Sharkey low .. he was far past it in the 30’s … he peaked 26 -28
