Should Dubois think about an early retirement?

I'm thinking of Danny, here. He had a horrific eye injury, blew his knee, and has now been knocked out twice by Uysk. He obviously has confidence issues, and is ambivalent about boxing. He clearly has a hit a ceiling.

He also has more money than he'll ever need, if he's a little careful.

So why stick around? Should he maybe just go and enjoy his best life?

 

Just keep fighting until Usyk retires.

I think he should rematch AJ and get another massive payday.

 

Sure but he probably doesn't want this to be his final moment in boxing.

Let him win an alphabet title in 1-2 years and then retire.

 

Nah just play the waiting game until Usyk retires and then try and get another title shot somewhere down the line.

 

He is still young. He didn't take that much punishment.

Heavyweights sometimes mature late.

He can still improve and make some noise.

Should Wlad have retired after Brewster when it was clear he wasn't going to turn out great and he was a year older than Dubois and had been battered by Brewster, Sanders and Purediddy? Yes. Logically, yes.

 

He can still probably beat (and make good money just stepping in the ring with) the following:

1. Joshua II
2. Wilder (if he can maul him before a right hand lands)
3. Hrgović II
   
4. Joyce II (and then presumably III for optimal $$$)
5. Chisora

Little to no chance against Parker or Kabayel, and there's no path toward him ever deserving a third shot at Usyk - but there's still a decent living to be made for him out there.

 

No, his destiny is to get treated like a gatekeeper by the new crop of heavyweights. It's inevitable. He should target Itauma first, that would be a good one, then Kabayel, Jalolov, Ajagba, Hovhannisyan, Wardley, Huni, Torrez and finally Teremoana. These are excellent match ups

 

Yeah he should, its embarrassing that he lost to the H2H GOAT among heavyweights.

 

He's only 27 and has been improving in recent fights, he's probably not even prime yet for a heavyweight. Yeah Usyk F'ed him up good but it's Usyk. People were writing off Parker not so long ago and look at him now, probably at his peak at 33 and more respected now than he probably was when he was champion. So, no Dubois shouldn't retire, his best years maybe still ahead of him and his legacy whatever that is, is still to be decided.

 

I appreciate all answers, but I think a lot of you are missing that I am primarily talking about some of the physical damage that has been done to him.

 

He would regret retiring now even if it’s the smart choice, too much would be left on the table, what could have been. Much more likely to regret the things we don’t do than the ones we do.

 

No way. He is 27 and already has built up a respectable resume and definitely has the raw tools to still get some big wins and become a world champion again.

Clearly, has some things to work on defensively but would run through most HWs out there even if he did not make those improvements.

 

Fighters fight, why would he retire? He's got plenty of earning potential left in the current climate. Before today plenty of people were picking him to win lol. It only takes one good result nowadays to have everyone swooning. There's been thousands of fighters with glass jaws that got knocked out some. The vast majority of boxers don't know when to quit anyway, and sure don't listen to outside noise. With that mandible he's unlikely to take any sort of sustained punishment in a fight, he'll be on the floor well before that point.
