....that they were really nothing special. Now that most of their "career amateurs" defected, they were at a level playing field against the rest of the world in Olympic boxing, and weren't even that great.

The argument that the Cubans would still dominate despite losing all their "professional amatuers" to pro's now seems laughable, doesn't it?

And on a side note, these defected Cuban fighters do not look all that great either in the professional side. Solis is a fatass waiting to be KTFO. Kinda puts into perspective all those threads concerning Felix Savon's "greatness" if he had went Pro LOL

They did dominate though. They brought home 8 medals. That's ridiculous considering they were expected to not be good this year. Russia had 11 guys qualified and was the top team in the world and got dicked hard and barely got any medals.

Really stupid and uninformed post. They brought home 8 medals. Did you even watch any of the fights? I saw about 7 fights on hd universal. The scoring was just terrible.

The pride of the Cuban boxing team has always been the amount of gold medals brought home. Did this suddenly change?

And yes the scoring system is atrocious. That didn't stop Cuba from sending grown men into prior Olympics against young amateurs and winning gold did it?

As you should know alot of the Cubans sent to China were replacements for fighters that defected and the scoring was terrible!

That is precisely my point. Sending the same fighters into each consecutive olympic games gives a false sense of an aspect of superiority that simply doesn't exist. And believe me, there were (and are) plenty of posters here who don't understand that fact. In time, the Cuban fighters that have turned pro will substantiate this even further -- Solis and Gamboa have yet to look anything remotely close to championship material and already showed deep flaws.

Another thing to keep in mind is this was largely a young and internationally inexperienced team. Most of these guys will still be there in 4 years in London, and will be a lot more mature and experienced. I hate to think how well they could do there.

Very good. However, with the scoring the system the only way to secure win is with a ko.

The scoring system is set to be changed after the Olympics, along with some other rules.

When the Eastern bloc countries were still Communist, they did the same thing the Cubans were doing. And the Cubans dominated even against them. And that was when Russia included all them fighters from Kazakhstan and Ukraine.

If you consider the size and population of Cuba against Russia, or even the US, you will realize what an achievement Cuban boxing is.

And ****... only a blind man could look at the Cubans and their excellent schooling and not realize why they've been, and will continue to be great.
