Note: "anywhere up to 168lb", not "Super-Middleweight." (Weigh in up to 168lb, same day. Approx. 50% resume, 50% H2H). 1. Greb 2. Fitzsimmons 3. Langford 4. Jones Jr 5. Charles 6. Choynski 7. Conn 8. Moore 9. Toney 10. Hopkins 11. Monzon 12. Robinson 13. Walker 14. LaMotta 15. Hagler 16. Ketchel 17. Tiger 18. Flowers 19. Marshall 20. Burns 21. O'Brien 22. Ward 23. Calzaghe 24. Nunn 25. Canelo 26. Anywhere up to 168lbs? It’d be Sugar Ray Robinson then, but if you mean H2H at 168lbs at their best, it’s Jones or Calzaghe.
Its a very comprehensive list and clearly you put a lot of work into it. I like it. It shows an impressive knowledge and appreciation of boxing history. My preference is to rate guys in 1 division only. For example, i prefer to rate Greb at middleweight. Its too hard to compare guys who existed before the division officially existed to guys who competed after the division was established. It is easy for us to compare Jones Jr. at 168 to Ward at 168 but its much harder to compare Langford and Greb. We don't know for how many fights, Langford or Greb would have weighed in under the 168 lb limit. My preference is to rank guys since the division has established. I prefer ranking Greb at middleweight and Langford at light -heavyweight. How about you create two lists: i) greatest super middleweights before the division officially existed and ii) greatest middleweights since the existence of the division.
I have to mention again that i really appreciate these kinds of posts because it requires a lot of effort to sort through 130 + years of boxing history. Looking forward to your lists in other divisions too.
Yes, that's a completely fair point. If I only included fighters with plenty of footage, the lists would look different, and would also be more realistic and practical. But a little less fun, maybe. I don't know as much as most of you guys, I just make these lists for a bit of fun.
Yes, sometimes I add silly stipulations and parameters for myself when I make these lists. It will probably come as no surprise that I am a teacher, and I think most of the kids hate me!
This is why I no longer rate people from prior to my time - even if sufficient amount of footage exists. Too many unknowns. So my all-time pound-for-pound list begins with Duran, not Robinson, for instance.
