Didn't Tiberi ragequit boxing because of how bad the decision was?

Yes, and it prompted a congressional investigation. Also years later Toney admitted he lost the fight. It was part of a longer article. I'll link it tomorrow. Also the author suggested that Peter McNeeley's 36-1 record he brought to the Tyson fight were primarily works. Also talks about s death in the ring because the ring doctors were fools.

Absolutely not. He flatly got outworked and lost. Toney, despite being an egomaniac, admitted in an interview he received a gift that night. That says it all. Toney, for all his boxing genius and raw natural talent, had a well deserved reputation for often being lazy and undisciplined in his training. He didn't respect Tiberi as a fighter, and his undoubtedly great legacy suffered a small price for that arrogance.

Its been a long time, but from what i remember Tiberi clearly won. That's the nature of one on one sports, you have to be ready for each competition. Toney's career in its entirety tells the of his true greatness. Sometime you have an off night against a tough apponent. In all likelyhood Tony probably had to lose alot of weight at the minute too quickley, and grossly underestimated Tiberi.

The evening my dad and I watched this, we were furious at the decision. When we wacthing it again many years later, we didn't think it was as a big of a robbery as we intiaily thought it was. I think we still had Tiberi winning it close. I would like to watch it again and score it.

Tiberi outhustled him but there was a lot of sloppy inside fighting from him, a lot of sloppy punches.

A year later we actually met James and his trainer Bill Miller and I remember Mr. Miller saying "James would have KO'ed a guy like that pretty quickly had he been in shape", "James went on a cruise with Jackie Kallen and wasn't in top shape".

Tiberi should have taken the rematch for a lot more money, but I think he knew he caught James at the right moment, wanted to go out on top as the good guy that got robbed. I think he knew James would have been ready and out to get him in the rematch.

I've only ever seen one person score it for Toney, besides his mom. Tiberi got jobbed.

Tiberi won, no doubt. Was Toney 'flat'? Maybe. Although visually he looked in good shape.

It was a bad decision. I didn’t think it was close whatsoever. Tiberi won clearly through work rate despite being the lesser talented fighter. It’s sad he missed out on getting his well earned victory.

There are about 100 threads on this fight. I never even scored it round by round. Fight was hard to watch. I saw Toney being out of gass after a couple of rounds and stumbling around the ring for the rest of the fight. Guy was on the verge of heart attack. Tiberi declined a rematch for what it is worth.

You know, a lot of people don't know this but Dave Tiberi was actually born Tave Diberi, but his manager thought it was a bad name to fight under, and he suggested the first letters be switched and that it would make him sound like more of an "every man," at least as far as ethnics go.

I had it for Tiberi by two points. Bad decision, but I’ve seen worse.
